어린 시절 서예를 익힌 후 서울대학교 미술대학에서 서양미술을 접했다. 대학원을 졸업한 이후 서울 성신고등학교(옛 소신학교) 교사로 일하다가 가톨릭 신앙을 접하였다. 이후 1969년 미술사를 공부하기 위해 프리부르 대학(University of Fribourg)으로 떠났고, 입학 1년 만에 도미니코회 영성을 통해 사제 성소를 느끼고 사제가 되기로 결심하였다.

프랑스로 건너간 김 신부는 자신의 예술적 바탕 위에 프로방스의 찬란한 빛과 브르타뉴의 섬세한 색조를 입혔다. 1989년 앙굴렘 세례자요한성당을 시작으로, 1998년 에브리 성당 등에 스테인드 글라스 작품을 설치하며 점차 유럽의 이목을 끌기 시작하였다. 그리고 프랑스를 비롯한 유럽의 여러 나라에 100여 점 이상의 작품을 제작, 설치하여 스테인드 글라스의 역사에 큰 기여를 했다 평가받고 있다. 2010년 프랑스 정부가 주는 문화예술훈장 ‘오피시에(Officier)’를 받았고, 2016년에는 동양인으로서는 최초로 현대 프랑스 사회 속 가톨릭 지성의 목소리를 대표하는 ‘아카데미 가톨릭 프랑스’ 회원으로 선정되었다.

그는 납(lead)을 통해 화면을 분할, 제작하던 전통적인 방식을 뛰어넘어, 대형 플로트 유리(float glass)에 붓질을 사용한 현대적 기법을 사용한다. 화면구성에 있어서는 강렬한 색과 나머지 여백을 극대화해 동양의 여백과 서양의 색채가 조화를 이루게 한다. 또한 유화용 물감에 용매를 넣어 묽게 한 뒤 캔버스면을 흠뻑 적시는 방식은 흡사 우리네 수묵화를 연상하게 한다. 이렇듯 전통과 현대를 융합하고, 그 내면 안에서 동서양의 지속적인 대화를 통해 탄생한 작품들은 아직도 진화하고 있다.

팔순을 훌쩍 넘긴 김 신부는 마음속에 태양을 지니고 있다면 모든 것이 괜찮다고 한다. 그래서인지 언제나 웃는 얼굴이다. 기쁨 속에 살고 작품은 이 기쁨에서 비롯된다 한다. 노 사제의 작품을 통해 전하는 기쁨과 환희의 메시지가 전시장 안에 가득 울려 퍼지길 바라본다.

 

After learning calligraphy in his childhood, Kim Enjoong studied Western art at the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University. Upon completing graduate school, he worked as a teacher at Seoul Sungsin High School (formerly Minor Seminary), where he encountered the Catholic faith. In 1969, he left for the University of Fribourg in Switzerland to study art history. Within a year of his enrollment, through the spirituality of the Dominican Order, he felt a calling to the priesthood and decided to become a priest.

After moving to France, Father Kim infused his artistic foundation with the radiant light of Provence and the delicate tones of Brittany. Beginning with his stained-glass work at Saint John the Baptist Church in Angoulême in 1989, and later at Évry Cathedral in 1998, he gradually attracted attention in Europe. Over the years, he created and installed more than one hundred works in France and across Europe, earning recognition for his significant contribution to the history of stained glass. In 2010, he was awarded the French government's Ordre des Arts et des Lettres at the rank of Officier, and in 2016, he became the first Asian to be named a member of the Académie catholique de France, an institution that represents the voice of Catholic intellect in contemporary French society.

Breaking away from the traditional method of dividing the surface with lead, he developed a modern technique of painting directly onto large float glass. In his compositions, he maximizes the interplay between intense color and expansive empty space, creating harmony between Eastern notions of emptiness and Western use of color. His diluted oil paints, soaked into the surface of the canvas, recall the spirit of traditional East Asian ink painting. In this way, his works are born through the fusion of tradition and modernity, and through a continual dialogue between East and West-a process that is still evolving.

Now well into his eighties, Father Kim says that as long as one carries the sun in one's heart, all will be well. Perhaps for this reason, his face is always graced with a smile. He lives in joy, and his art springs from this joy. We hope that the message of joy and exultation conveyed through the works of this venerable priest will fill the exhibition hall.
