제주현대미술관은 야외 유휴공간을 ‘1평 미술관’이라는 감성적인 체험의 장으로 재탄생시켜 관객 참여형 전시인 아트저지를 꾸준히 선보이고 있다. 2021년부터는 다양한 현대미술 작가들의 작품을 널리 알리고자 다각도의 전시 콘텐츠를 기획해 왔으며, 열 번째 프로젝트 작가로 50BELL 오영종 작가를 선정했다.

50BELL 오영종 작가는 사진이 지닌 특별한 성격에 주목한다. 사진은 한순간을 포착하지만, 그 안에는 오랜 시간 동안 지속되는 영원성의 의미도 담겨 있다. 작가는 이처럼 순간성과 지속성이 교차하는 지점에서 사진의 본질을 탐색한다. 작가에게 사진은 단순한 기록이 아닌, 피사체를 바라보는 즉각적인 반응과 셔터를 누르는 결단이 만나는 ‘지금 이 순간’을 살아가는 태도이기도 하다. 결국 사진은 외부 세계를 담는 동시에, 작가의 생각과 존재 방식을 비추는 창이 된다. 전시 제목 ≪시선, 너머≫는 이러한 작가의 태도를 잘 보여준다. ‘시선’은 눈에 보이는 대상을 향한 객관적인 관찰을, ‘너머’는 그 대상을 새롭게 해석하고 확장해 나가는 과정을 의미한다. 작가는 이를 통해 과거나 미래에 얽매여 현재를 놓치고 있는 우리의 모습을 되돌아보게 한다. 그는 사진 작업을 통해 스스로를 ‘지금, 여기’에 머무르게 하며, 순간과 마주하는 태도 자체가 삶을 치유할 수 있다는 가능성을 제시한다. 이번 전시는 수년간에 걸쳐 제작된 사진 작업들을 바탕으로 구성한 영상 작업을 선보인다. 관객은 흐르는 이미지 속에서 ‘시선’이 ‘너머’로 확장되는 과정을 따라가며, 사진이 어떻게 현재를 새롭게 바라보는 창이 되는지를 자연스럽게 경험하게 될 것이다.

작가의 작업은 단순한 현실 재현을 넘어 주관적 사유의 시각화에 초점을 두며 사실적 묘사에 머물지 않고, 감정과 생각, 철학을 이미지 속에 반영하며 재구성한다. 이 과정에서 상징과 은유, 왜곡 같은 시각적 장치가 활용되고, 구도와 배치, 착시와 시각적 혼란을 통해 전통적인 원근법을 해체한다. 그 결과 피사체의 구체적 현실성은 희미해지고, 오히려 색채와 질감이 두드러지며 화면을 채운다. 관객은 익숙한 현실을 그대로 보는 대신, 새로운 인식적 경험을 하게 된다. 예술에서의 공간 재현은 보통 단일한 시점의 규칙에 따르지만, 작가는 이를 의도적으로 해체한다. 다중 시점, 평면성의 강조, 왜곡된 공간을 통해 “세계는 이렇게만 보이는 것이 아니다”라는 메시지를 전한다. 이는 시공간의 제약에서 벗어나 또 다른 현실을 구성하는 예술적 은유이자, 해석의 자유와 표현의 무한한 가능성을 드러낸다. 작가의 사진은 곧 ‘나만의 사진’으로서, 관객 개개인이 자기만의 순간과 마주하고, 새로운 시공간을 상상하는 기회를 제공한다.

이번 전시는 관객에게 개별적이고 특별한 감각적 체험을 선사한다. 이를 통해 세상을 바라보는 시선이 확장되고, 인식은 더욱 풍부해질 것이다. 나아가 일상과 삶 속에 새로운 질문과 영감을 불러일으키며, 예술이 지닌 무한한 자유와 해석의 가능성을 직접 경험할 수 있는 자리가 되기를 기대한다.

The Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art has been consistently presenting Art Jeoji, a participatory exhibition series, by transforming an idle outdoor space into the “1 Pyeong Museum”—a compact structure designed for a solitary viewing experience. Since 2021, the museum has planned multifaceted exhibition content to widely promote the works of various contemporary artists. For its tenth project, it has selected artist 50Bell Oh Young-jong.

Artist Oh Young-jong, who works under the name 50Bell, focuses on the unique nature of photography. Although a photograph captures a single moment, it also holds within it the meaning of eternity—a sense of duration that persists over time. As such, the artist explores the essence of photography at the intersection of transience and continuity. For him, photography is not merely documentation; it is also an attitude of living “the moment” when the immediacy of observing a subject encounters the decisive act of releasing the shutter. In the end, a photograph becomes a window into the artist’s thoughts and way of being, while at the same time embodying the external world. The exhibition title Gaze, Beyond encapsulates this artistic perspective. “Gaze” refers to the objective act of observing what is visible; “Beyond” suggests a process of reinterpreting and expanding the seen. Through this approach, the artist invites viewers to reflect on how we often become entangled in the past or future and, in doing so, miss out on the present. Through his photographic practice, the artist anchors himself in the “here and now,” offering the possibility that the very act of facing the moment can bring healing to life. This exhibition presents a video work composed of photographs produced over several years. As images unfold, the audience is naturally drawn into the process by which the “gaze” expands “beyond,” and comes to experience how photography becomes a lens through which to reimagine the present.

The artist’s work goes beyond a mere reproduction of reality, focusing on the visualization of subjective thought. Rather than adhering to realistic depictions, he reconstructs images that reflect emotions, ideas, and philosophy. In this process, visual devices such as symbolism, metaphor, and distortion come into play, while composition, arrangement, optical illusion, and visual disorientation serve to dismantle traditional perspective. As a result, the concrete realism of the subject fades, while color and texture emerge with greater intensity to fill the frame. Instead of seeing familiar reality as it is, viewers are led into a new perceptual experience. In art, the representation of space usually follows the rules of a single viewpoint, yet the artist deliberately deconstructs them. Through multiple perspectives, the emphasis on flatness, and distorted spaces, he conveys the message that “the world is not only seen in this way.” This becomes both an artistic metaphor that creates another reality beyond the constraints of time and space, and a revelation of interpretive freedom and infinite possibilities of expression. Ultimately, the artist’s photographs become “my own photographs,” offering each viewer an opportunity to confront their own moment and to imagine new dimensions of time and space.

This exhibition presents each viewer with a personal and distinctive sensory experience. Through it, one’s way of seeing the world is expanded, and perception becomes enriched. Furthermore, it seeks to awaken new questions and inspirations within everyday life, while providing a venue to directly experience the boundless freedom and interpretive possibilities that art can hold.
