정연재 작가는 회화와 조각, 평면과 입체, 디자인과 순수미술의 경계에서 발생하는 감각적 대비와 긴장에 주목하며, 고유한 조형 언어를 구축한다. 선과 면, 색채와 물성을 지닌 재료를 바탕으로 시각적 공간감을 구성하고, 단순하면서도 본질적인 형태를 제시한다.

작업은 평면과 입체가 공존하는 구조를 지니며, 이중적인 시각 경험을 유도한다. 반복되는 형태 속에 의도적인 어긋남과 변형을 더해, 익숙한 질서 안에서 낯선 감각을 드러내고 관람자의 인식을 환기시킨다.

작업은 하나의 시각적 질서를 설정한 뒤, 그 내부에서 균형을 흔들고 경계를 재조정하는 방식으로 전개된다. 작가에게 ‘대비’는 동서양의 문화와 언어, 빛과 그림자처럼 서로 다른 감각적 질서가 공존하는 인식의 구조이자 사고의 틀이다. 이러한 대비의 조합을 통해 일상의 현상을 추상적으로 재구성하고, 그 사이의 간극과 충돌을 시각화한다.

Yeonjae Chung constructs a distinct visual language by focusing on the sensory tensions and contrasts that arise at the boundaries between painting and sculpture, the flat and the dimensional, design and fine art. Utilizing materials that carry line, surface, color, and tactility, the artist creates visual spaces composed of simple yet essential forms.

Her works embody structures in which the flat and the three-dimensional coexist, encouraging a dual visual experience. By introducing deliberate displacements and subtle variations within repeated forms, Chung reveals unfamiliar sensations embedded in familiar systems, prompting shifts in perception.

Each work begins with the establishment of a visual order, which is then reconfigured through shifts in balance and boundary. For the artist, “contrast” refers not merely to aesthetic difference but to the coexistence of distinct sensory systems—such as Eastern and Western cultures, language, and light and shadow—formed through personal experience. Through this interplay, Chung abstractly reconstructs everyday phenomena and visualizes the gaps and frictions that exist between elements.
