그림이란 내가 창작해 내는 것 같지만 실제로는 나도 모르는 나의 세계를 의도하지 않았던 색과 형태로 표현하면서 나를 치유하고 완성시킨다. 

2022년에 나는 3일 밤을 새우고, 마라톤을 완주한 상태와 같았다. 나의 그런 형편없는 상태에도 전시를 해보자는 관장님의 격려에 용기를 내서 작업을 시작했지만 하얀 캔버스가 내 머릿속과 같았고 오로지 ’쉬고 싶다‘라는 생각뿐이었다.

그렇게 빈 캔버스를 마주하고 멍하니 앉아 있다가 문득 2017년 개인전 때 달빛에 기대어 쉬었던 기억이 떠올라 내가 쉬는 것을 상상하며 의자를 그리기 시작했다. 달과 의자를 그리고 그 안에 앉아 있으니 시간이 천천히 흘렀다. 천천히 흐르는 시간 안에서 나에게 집중하는 달과 오롯이 나만을 위해 빛나는 별들을 그렸고 그 달과 별이 나를 치유하기 시작했다.

그동안 그려온, 사람들을 상징하던 집은 생략됐고 이제 캔버스 안에는 선으로 표현된 달과 산, 꽃으로 표현된 별, 그리고 의자만이 존재하게 되었다. 내가 신경 쓰며 집착했던 것들을 버리는 작업을 통해 비로소 진정한 쉼을 찾을 수 있게 된 것이다.

작품을 하나하나 완성하는 동안 나는 그림 안의 모든 의자에 앉아 쉬는 여유를 누렸고 내 영혼은 그 치유의 과정을 거쳐 건강해졌다. 다시 쉬고 싶으면 언제든지 나의 의자에 앉으면 되는 것을 알게 되었다.

나는 가벼워진 마음으로 별들이 가득 빛나는 그림으로 마무리할 수 있었다.

내가 의자에 앉아 쉬는 시간을 가졌듯이, 전시장에 오신 분들 중 쉼이 필요한분이 계시다면 원하는 의자에 앉아 달빛과 별빛의 축복과 위로를 받으셨으면 좋겠다.

As an exhibition that conveys rest and healing to people, artist Kim Hye-sun’s ‘In the Moon Light’ will be held at Marina Gallery from May 11 to June 5.

Painting may seem like something I create, but in reality, it heals and completes me by expressing my unknown world in colors and shapes that I did not intend. In 2022, I stayed up all night for three nights and felt like I had run a marathon. With Ms.Ham’s encouragement to hold an exhibition despite my poor condition, I gathered courage and started working, but the white canvas was like in my head, and all I could think was, 'I want to rest.'

As I was sitting blankly facing the canvas, I suddenly remembered resting against the moonlight during my solo exhibition in 2017, and started drawing a chair, imagining myself resting. As I drew the moon and a chair and sat inside it, time passed slowly. In the slowly flowing time, I drew the moon focusing on me and the stars shining just for me, and the moon and stars began to heal me.

The house that symbolized the people that had been drawn so far was omitted, and now only the moon and mountains expressed in lines, the stars expressed in flowers, and the chair exist in the canvas. It was only through letting go of the things I cared & obsessed, that I was finally able to find true rest.

While I was completing each work, I sat on every chair in the painting and enjoyed a break, and my soul became healthy through the healing process. I learned that whenever I wanted to rest again, I could just sit in my chair. With a lighter heart, I was able to finish the painting full of shining stars. Just as I had time to rest while sitting in a chair, I hope that if there is anyone who comes to the exhibition hall who needs rest, they can sit in the chair of their choice and receive the blessings and comfort of moonlight and starlight.
