50년 이상 자신의 몸을 대상으로 예술작업을 해온 오를랑의 회고전으로, 작가는 정치, 사회, 종교가 우리의 몸, 특히 여성의 몸과 정신에 가해온 낡은 정체성을 벗어 던지고 과학기술의 힘을 빌어 인간의 몸 자체를 변형시킴으로써 첨단 기술시대의 새로운 개념의 신체를 제시한다. 작가는 1990년대 외과수술을 예술 도구로, 수술실을 작업실 삼아 수술대 위에서 자신이 성형수술을 받는 전 과정을 위성중계한 <성형수술 퍼포먼스>로 세계적 명성을 얻었다. 이후 아홉 번에 걸쳐 퍼포먼스를 시도한 그녀는 수술의 전과정이 사회적 공론의 장으로 작동하길 바라며 다음과 같이 고백한다. “처음부터 내 작품은 신체에 가해지는 사회적, 정치적, 종교적 압력들에 대한 질문이다.” “신체를 작업하기, 그리고 내 몸 위에서 작업하기, 그것은 사적인 것과 사회적인 것을 함께 나열하기 위한 것이다.” 이처럼 그는 변형된 자신의 몸을 ‘수정된 기성품’이라 부르며, 더이상 성형수술이 어려워진 이후에는 생명공학, 디지털 합성기술, 증강현실, 게임 등 다양한 첨단 기술들을 활용하여 오늘날 예술과 기술의 관계, 미래의 인간 정체성에 대해 질문한다.

This retrospective intends to unfold the work of ORLAN, internationally renowned for her performances involving cosmetic surgery, from 1966 to 2016. ORLAN emancipates herself from social pressures and integrates into her quest the History of humanity and the planetary culture - beyond that of common man to include that of flora and fauna – to become closer to the primitive time of life. About her practice the artist says: “my work has always, right from the start, questioned the social, political and religious pressures exerted on bodies.” She continues: “working on the body and on my body means bringing together the private and the social.” ORLAN seeks to illuminate the path that leads to delight, and to salvation and freedom from social prejudices. In that regard, ORLAN has long foreshadowed the possibility that we humans will liberate ourselves from the fetters of obsolete systems, conventions, and ideas, and then towards ushering in neo humanity and new institutions. In this sense, the very core of ORLAN’s art is to free humans from images of their beings mercilessly defeated by modern technology and the outdated identity of the human, and to seek a neo-humanity.
