<국립현대미술관 현대차 시리즈>는 국립현대미술관이 주최하고 현대자동차가 후원하는 연례 프로젝트로 2014년부터 10년 동안 매 해 한 명의 한국 중진 작가를 초대해 지원하고 있다. 이 시리즈는 독자적인 작품세계를 구축해 온 작가에게 대규모 신작을 실현할 기회를 제공함으로써 작업 활동에 새로운 전환과 발전의 계기를 마련하고 한국 현대미술에 새로운 활력을 불어넣기 위해 기획되었다. 올해는 그 세 번째로, 지난 30년간 회화와 일상의 사물, 행위로서의 이민, 망명 그리고 폭력성의 문제 등 사회적 이슈를 탐구해 온 김수자 작가가 선정되어 ‘국립현대미술관 현대차 시리즈 2016: 김수자·마음의 기하학’전이 진행된다. 이번 전시는 김수자 작가의 작품세계를 아우를 수 있는 대형 설치 작업 <마음의 기하학>을 비롯해 음향사운드, 영상, 퍼포먼스, 조각 등 다양한 9점의 작품을 선보이며 작가의 창작활동에 있어 의미 있는 전환을 모색하는 계기를 마련하며, 동시에 관람객들에게는 참여와 소통을 통해 동시대 안에서의 삶과 예술에 대해 함께 생각하는 자리를 제공하고자 한다.
MMCA HYUNDAI MOTOR SERIES is the museum’s annual program sponsored by the Hyundai Motor company. Since its inauguration in 2014, the series has been inviting and supporting one leading artist of Korea every year. Artist KIM Soo-ja(1957- ) has been selected for this year. For the past 30 years, KIM Soo-ja’s ever-evolving work has explored painting, daily objects, actions, and social issues such as migration, exile, and violence. This year’s exhibition ‘MMCA Hyundai Motor Series 2016: KIM Soo-ja – Archive of Mind’ takes place at the MMCA, Seoul in Gallery 5 and in the courtyard. The project will bring
together nine pieces to present an overview of KIM Soo-ja’s artistic realm and will serve as an impetus for the artist to seek a meaningful shift in her practice. This exhibition features the large-scale installation art <Archive of Mind>, which shows KIM Soo-ja’s art world very well, as well as 8 pieces of art by the artist such as sound, video, performance, and sculpture. It will shed light on the true aspect of KIM Soo-ja who is active in the world stage. Emphasizing visitors’ participation and communication, it will provide an opportunity for visitors to think about both contemporary life and art.
