평창동계올림픽의 문화올림픽실현을 위해 2013년 시작되어 올해로 3회째를 맞이하는 평창비엔날레 2017은 ‘다섯 개의 달, 익명과 미지의 귀환’을 주제로 주류적 시선에서 누락되어 있는 개별적 삶과 사소한 존재들과 일상의 가치를 재조명하고 현실의 문제를 바탕으로 미래를 조망하는 다각적인 관점을 제시한다. ‘다섯 개의 달’은 경포에서 전해지는 말로 하늘에 뜬 달, 바다에 비친 달, 호수에 잠긴 달, 술잔에 빠진 달, 님의 눈동자에 비친 달을 의미하는데 ‘익명과 미지의 귀환’과 함께 일상 속 어디에나 존재할 수 있는 예술을 새로운 시선으로 탐색하고, 소외되었거나 조명받지 못했던 대상과 주체들을 호출한다는 기획의도가 반영되었다. 주제전은 본전시, 월드와이드비디오(싱글채널영상전), 아트링커스(야외전)로 구성되어 있는데, 한국을 포함 총 19개국, 81개 팀 160여 점의 작품을 선보인다. 또한 10인의 강원도 원로작가를 소개하는 특별전, 국제세미나, 시민참여 프로그램들이 진행되며 2월 3일부터 5일까지는 공연행사인 ‘강릉신날레’도 같은 장소에서 열린다.

Since its conception in 2013 as a cultural pre-event for Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games of 2018, the exhibition is celebrating its 3rd anniversary this year with the theme of ‘Five Moons, Return of the Nameless and Unknown’. In this year, the exhibition will shed new light on the values of trivial things in personal and everyday lives that were previously left out from the mainstream and present multifaceted views on the future based on real-life problems. The theme of five moons – moon in the sky, moon on the sea, moon in the lake, moon in the glass, and moon in lover’s eyes - was borrowed from a folk tale in Gyeongpo area. The subtitle, ‘Return of the Nameless and Unknown’, is reflecting the exhibition planners’ ideas of rediscovering arts that can exist in anywhere in everyday lives and calling up the subjects and entities that have been marginalized or stayed out of the limelight. The exhibition consists of Main Exhibition, World-Wide Video (single-channel video work projection) and Art Linkers (outdoor), presenting about 160 works by 81 teams from 19 different countries including South Korea. Other events include special exhibition of 10 representative artists from Gangwon province, international seminar and citizen participation program. The performance event, Gangneung Folk Art Festival, will be held from February 3 to 5 in the same venue.
