(Inner Mass), 1983, Wood, 90×60×75cm

Born in 1945, CHUN Kook-kwang majored in sculpture at Hongik University’s College and Graduate School of Fine Art. His works were accepted five times in the National Art Exhibition of Korea. Winning the Excellence Award in the sculpture category of Space Prize in 1977, Special Selection Award of the National Art Exhibition in 1979 and 1980, and the Grand Prize in the nonfigurative category of the National Art Exhibition in 1981 propelled him into recognition as a promising sculptor. Since the early 1970s, he had actively done many works. However, in 1990 he died at the age of 46 in a tragic accident. Having filled his short life with a strong passion and intense
longing for art, CHUN is recognized to have inherited and refined the tradition of modernist abstract sculpture in the history of contemporary Korean art. He experimented with a variety of materials and intensified his intellectual exploration into the structure of mass through his representative works Amass, Inner Mass, and others. Unlike previous retrospective of CHUN’s work that have mainly focused on the historical significance of his sculptures, this exhibition concentrates on the modernity of his works. The sculptures and drawings to be shown will present the various dimensions of his works.
