이 전시는 현대사회의 결을 담아내는 전시로 한국 현대미술의 대표적인 미술가로 활동해온 중견작가를 새롭게 조망한다. 전시에 참여한 6명의 작가는 1950-60년대에 출생해 한국 근현대사의 변화를 함께 한 세대로 인천 연고의 작가들이다.
전시된 작품들은 인간의 실존, 문명의 이기, 현대 사회의 권력 구조 등의 주제를 다루고 있으며 그중에서도 예술과 사회, 예술과 현실의 접점에 대한 작가들의 고민을 담고 있다. 기존의 구조와 체계를 비틀고, 익숙한 것을 낯설게 하며 숨겨진 것을 드러내는 등 다양한 방식을 통해 각자의 세계관과 시대정신을 드러낸다. 작가들은 견고하게 구축된 권력 구조와 부조리한 현실을 깨뜨리는 행위를 통해 유토피아적 세계를 갈망한다. 그것은 어떠한 원칙과 규범, 권력이나 담론에 구애받지 않는 자유로운 수용과 체험을 구가하는 새로운 시대인 것이다.
이 전시는 동선의 시작과 끝이 없다. 마치 복잡다단한 세상의 얽히고설킨 현실과 시간의 흐름과 같이. 그 거센 세월의 시간 속에서 모든 생명이 가진 심연에 자리한 파괴되지 않는 순수성과, 절망을 극복한 삶에 대한 강한 의지, 희망과 같은 그들이 전하고자 한 수평적 세계의 메시지들을 발견해 보길 바란다.
This exhibition shows layers of modern society we live in and newly illuminates the established artists who have worked as representative Korean contemporary artists. Born in 1950-60s, these 6 artists are Incheon-born or spent their early days in Incheon. This means they went through transformations in modern history of Korea.
Exhibited works deal with a far-reaching issues such as human existence, modern conveniences, contemporary society’s power structure, but most of all, they are persistently concerned about the interface between art and reality, art and society. They present each different view of the world and the spirit of the times as they twist existing structure and system or reveal what was hidden by defamilarization.
This exhibition has no beginning nor end in terms of the moving line. Just like the time flow of this tangled world. Hope you can discover those messages from the horizontal world the artists wanted to deliver such as hope, strong will for life overcoming despair and the undestroyable purity located in the center of all the living organisms.
