‘김종영미술상’은 일생을 한국조각예술 교육에 헌신하고, 한국추상조각의 선구자로 세계 속의 한국미술을 위해 일로매진한 김종영 선생의 유지를 기리기 위해 그의 유족과 후학들이 우성김종영기념사업회를 결성하여 수상하고 있는 미술상이다. 조각장르에 국한되었던 기존의 조각상에서 나이와 장르의 제한을 없앤 미술상으로 재탄생해 2018년 진행되었던 제15회 김종영미술상의 주인공 박일순 조각가의 전시가 2년간의 준비를 마치고 2020년 김종영미술관에서 진행되고 있다.
박일순은 오랜 시간 나무로 작업하고 있다. 전시된 나무는 벌목 후 남은 그루터기, 면봉, 연필, 합판, 혹은 실패와 같이 다양한 형태이다. 그리고 그녀의 작품은 초록의 싱그러움이 넘쳐난다. 박일순의 작업을 통해 만물의 영장이라 자부하는 인간이 실로 어떤 존재인지 반성하게 된다. 이와 더불어 그녀의 작업은 ‘절제의 아름다움’을 모색한 여정이라고 할 수 있다. 그녀의 삶 또한 은일하다. 김종영미술상 수상을 계기로 한국미술계가 그녀의 작업을 새롭게 조망하는 계기가 되었으면 한다. 더불어 그녀가 더욱 일로매진하여 한국미술계에 절제의 아름다움의 결정체를 선보여 주리라 기대해본다.
In 1989, the former students and family of the late artist founded the Memorial Foundation for KIM Chong yung. Created to provide support for the development of cultural and artistic circles, and to contribute to social and artistic development, the memorial foundation established the KIM Chong yung Art Award in 1990 to achieve such goals. The KIM Chong yung Art Award is presented every 2 years, thus contributing to the development of South Korean art. The 15th Kim Chong yung Art Award’s winner is PARK Il-soon. So, PARK’s solo exhibition is opened at KIM Chong yung museum.
PARK’s work can be understood to reflect the traditional Korean artistic concept of submitting to the ways of nature. And there is a simple and humble beauty to be found in PARK Il-soon’s work. In them we can feel a traditional Korean craftsman’s stubborn dedication to her own singular philosophy and will. Her work is contemplative rather than merely conceptual, and it does not attempt to provide any profound or fancy messages. What it does do is maintain itself as a quite reflection of nature, capitulating in its encounter and solemnly giving wat to its influence.
