‘월전우화’전은 현대 한국의 역사에 있어서 중요한 발자취를 남긴 월전 장우성(1912-2005)의 탄생 110주년을 맞아 그 작품 세계의 핵심에 해당되는 동물 그림을 집중 조명하려는 의도로 준비되었다. 그의 동물 그림의 전모를 확인할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 1930년대부터 2000년대에 이르는 그의 오랜 작품세계의 변화와 특징도확인할 수 있는 기회이다. 그는 사회 전반은 물론 문화와 미술의 전면적 서구화가 진행된 20세기의 상황 속에서 전통시대 문인화文人畵의 미의식과 표현방식을 계승, 발전시키며 자신의 작품세계를 일구어 갔다. 이는 20세기 후반 수묵채색화 작가들에게 직간접적인영향을 미치며 주요한 하나의 경향을 이루게 되었다. 이러한 월전의 작품세계에 있어서 동물 그림은 핵심적인 장르였으며, 특히 시사적이고 풍자적인 동물 그림은 그의 진취적인 창작태도를 잘 보여준다. 동물에 빗대어 인간사회의 비열함과 천박함, 온갖 부정부패가 팽배한 서글픈 세태를 통렬하게 비판하는 의도가 담긴 것이었다.


The exhibition ‘Woljeon’s Fable: CHANG Woo Soung’s Animal paintings’ was prepared with the intention of highlighting animal paintings at the heart of the world of the work to mark the 110th anniversary of the birth of Woljeon CHANG Woosoung(1912-2005), who left an important mark in modern Korean painting history. This is an opportunity not only to see the full extent of his animal paintings, but also to see the changes and characteristics of his long-standing work from the 1930s to the 2000s. He built his world of works by inheriting and developing the aesthetics and expression of literary paintings in the traditional era in the 20th century, where not only society but also culture and art were completely westernized. Animal painting was a key genre in the world of Woljeon’s works, and especially suggestive and satirical animal painting shows his enterprising creative attitude. It was intended to harshly criticize the meanness and vulgarity of human society and the sad world where all kinds of corruption prevails in comparison to animals.
