1923년 4월 25일 경남 진주 대안동 진주청년회관에서 80여 명의 백정과 지역 활동가들이 모여 ‘형평사(衡平社)’를 창립한다. 형평사는 저울(衡)처럼 평등한(平) 사회를 만들자는 단체(社)를 뜻한다. 1894년 갑오개혁을 통해 제도적으로는 모든 사람이 평등한 세상이 열렸지만 여전히 불평등한 세상이었다. 그래서 형평사는 ‘주지(主旨)’ 글을 통해 백정에 대한 차별과 억압을 없애고 공평(公平)과 애정을 사회와 사람의 바탕이라 선언한다. 본 전시는 지난 100년 동안 우리 사회가 품고 있는 차별과 혐오에 대해 생각해보는 시간을 마련했다. 형평운동과 관련된 1차 사료와 진주의 형평운동기념사업회 활동 자료, 그리고 형평운동과 관련된 기존 예술 활동을 문학과 삽화 그리고 영화를 중심으로 소개한다. 마지막으로 자신들의 조형 언어로 형평운동을 재구성한 권은비, 서평주, 최수환 작가의 신작을 만나볼 수 있다. 이번 전시를 통해 ‘형평’의 정신을 가슴 한편에 품고 우리 삶의 현장을 되돌아보는 기회가 될 수 있기를 기대해본다.

On April 25, about 80 baekjeong and local activists gathered together at the Jinju Youth Center in Daean-dong in Jinju, and launched an alliance named Hyeongpyeongsa (衡平社). It refers to an organization to form a society being as socially equal as balanced scales. The Gabo Reform began in 1894 during the reign of Gojong of Korea. A society of equality for all people kicked off, institutionally speaking, but it was still an unequal world in practice. Above all social classes, the baekjeong was the lowest rank and was subject to discrimination and hatred even by laborers and farmers. Thus, the Hyeongpyeongsa declared that justice and love are the basis of society and people. The exhibition was intended for the audience to mull over discrimination and hatred deeply rooted in the society for the past 100 years. We hope that all the audience could carry home the spirit of ‘hyeongpyeong (equality)’ in their heart.
