코오롱의 문화예술 나눔공간 ‘스페이스K 서울’은 10월 27일부터 제여란(1960- ) 개인전 ‘Road to Purple’을 개최한다. 지난 30여 년간 추상 작업을 통해 회화와 조형 언어에 대해 지속적으로 탐구해온 제여란은 이번 전시에서 ‘보라’를 전면에 내세우며 새로운 색에 대한 실험을 이어간다. 스퀴지를 활용한 작가의 몸짓은 캔버스 안에서 새로운 우주를 만들어 내고 있다. 그 안에는 색과 색 사이 펼쳐진 빛의 다발, 재료의 점성에 따라 변하는 몸과 캔버스 간의 밀고 당기는 긴장과 조율이 공존한다. 이번 전시는 작가가 탐구해온 색채 흐름에 주목했다. 90년대 검은색을 다루며 질감이 두드러진 회화는 2000년대 초반 어두운 톤의 푸른 색조와 붉은 색조의 운동성을 강조한 회화로 이어진다. 본격적으로 스퀴지를 활용한 추상회화는 율동감이 강조되며 다채로운 색으로 공간을 압도한다. 전시 제목 ‘Road to Purple’은 이렇게 특정한 색으로 본질에 접근하고자 하는 작가의 회화적 태도를 보여준다. 이번 전시는 제여란이 보여준 추상의 여정을 색의 변화 과정으로 탐색한다. 마치 대지 혹은 대기와도 같은 역동적인 작가의 화면은 끊임없는 색의 연구로 변화를 거듭해 그 자체로 회화적 생명력을 발산하고 있다.

‘Space K’, the art & culture sharing space of Kolon Group, is pleased to present a solo exhibition of JE Yeo Ran (b.1960), ‘Road to Purple’, open from October 27, 2022. JE has persistently pursued her own artistic language in form and painting through abstract works. In this show she puts ‘purple’ in front, continuing her experimentations with colors. The artist’s gestures by squeegee create a new universe inside the canvas. There’s a bundle of light spread between colors. In addition, the tension and coordination between the body and the canvas that changes with the viscosity of the material coexist. This exhibition focused on the color flow that the artist has been exploring. Painting, which deals with black in the 90s and has a prominent texture, leads to paintings that emphasize the motility of dark blue and red tones in the early 2000s. These abstract works deliver a sense of dynamic rhythms and overwhelm the space with various tones. The title ‘Road to Purple’ aptly shows her artistic attitude toward the essence with a particular color. This show tries to present her journey in abstract painting as a steady transition of colors. The artist’s canvas that looks dynamic like land or maybe atmosphere, through her incessant quest for color, emits the life force in painting.
