전남도립미술관은 2025년 오지호 탄생 120주년을 기념하여, 국립현대미술관과 공동으로 《오지호와 인상주의: 빛의 약동에서 색채로》 전시를 개최한다. 이 전시는 2024년이 제1회 인상파 전시(1874)로부터 150주년이 되는 해임을 기념하는 의미도 지니고 있다. 전시에서는 오지호의 전 생애를 아우르는 회화 작품 100여 점과 아카이브 자료 50여 점을 선보인다.
또한, 이번 전시에서는 한국 서양화 1세대 작가들의 일본 동경예술대학 졸업 작품들과, 프랑스 인상주의 대표 작가인 클로드 모네와 빈센트 반 고흐의 예술 세계를 VR로 체험할 특별한 기회도 제공된다.
모후산인 오지호(吳之湖, 1905-82)는 한국의 자연과 풍토를 주제로“광光에 의하여 약동하는 생명”을 담아 인상주의 화풍을 독자적으로 구현한 한국 서양화단의 거목이다.
서구 근대미술 사조의 유입이라는 경로의 선상에서 발현된 한국 인상주의란 무엇일까. ‘빛을 그린 화가’로 불리는 오지호는 「순수회화론」(1938)에서 ‘회화는 광光의 예술’이라고 천명함으로써 ‘광光의 약동’, ‘색色의 환희’를 탐구했다.
In commemoration of the 120th anniversary of OH Chi-ho’s birth in 2025, the Jeonnam Museum of Art co-host exhibition《OH Chi-ho and Impressionism: From Vibrant Light to Color》with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. Featuring a total of 100 works centered around OH Chi-ho and the theme of Impressionism, the exhibition offers a look at OH’s graduation work from Tokyo University of the Arts. Visitors can also experience the world of French Impressionist masters Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh through immersive VR content.
OH Chi-ho, whose pen name was Mohusanin, was a leading figure in Korean Western-style art, known for exploring Korean nature and climate through a distinct impressionist style that captured “life vibrant with light.”
This exhibition prompts the question: What is Korean Impressionism that emerged in the process of introducing Western oil painting, Impressionist techniques, and its development.
Dubbed the “painter of light,” OH Chi-ho sought to depict impressions in their essence, such as “light pulses” and color jubilance,” and declared in his 1938 essay 「Pure Painting Theory」 that “Painting is the art of light.”
