1950년대 ‘인공지능’이라는 용어가 탄생한 이래 오늘에 이르러 인공지능 시대는 전환점에 도달하였다. 인간의 고유 영역으로 여겨지던 예술도 예외 없이 인공지능의 도전을 받게 되었다. 인공지능은 예술가가 될 수 있을까? 예술가의 친절한 조수이자 훌륭한 도구일까? 

역설적으로 인공지능에 관한 질문을 통해 예술 창작의 ‘조건’과 ‘고유함’에 대해 성찰하게 된다. 이번 특별전은 이러한 질문을 바탕으로 인공지능 시대의 전환점에서 예술 창작의 본질을 다시 한번 논의하고자 마련되었다. 전시는 인공지능과 예술의 융합까지의 과정과 인공지능 기술로 창작 세계를 확장하고 새로운 예술표현 방식을 개척한 작가들의 작품을 만나본다. 이어서 인공지능 기술과 맞물려 생겨난 새로운 문제들과 그 한계에 접근한 작품들을 소개한다. 마지막으로 예술 창작의 본질을 침잠하고 스며드는 기술 위를 끊임없이 ‘부유하는 예술’이라는 관점으로 제시해 보았다. 전시를 통해 예술과 첨단기술의 상호작용과 공진화(共進化)를 넘어 진정한 예술 창작의 의미를 되새겨보는 시간이 되었으면 한다.

Since the conception of artificial intelligence in the 1950s, its rapid evolution has brought us to a critical juncture. The phrase “turning point of the AI era” does not merely indicate technological advancements but signifies AI’s deep integration into the fabric of our everyday lives. Art, once considered a uniquely human domain, is no exception to the challenges of AI. Can AI become an artist? Is it a kind assistant or an excellent tool for artists? 

By posing questions about artificial intelligence, we are, perhaps paradoxically, led to reflect on the very ‘conditions’ and ‘uniqueness’ of artistic creation. The Ulsan Art Museum’s special exhibition, 《Art and Artificial Intelligence》, aims to engage with these inquiries, examining the essence of artistic creation at this critical turning point in the AI era.

This exhibition serves as a platform to explore the interaction and co-evolution of art and cutting-edge technology, inviting us to reconsider the meaning of true artistic creation.
