오늘날의 글로벌 웹과 미디어 산업을 보자면 TV는 많은 거점을 확보할 것이라는 1974년의 백남준의 예측보다 더 선견지명 있는 예언은 드물다. 그는 예술과 과학의 경계를 넘나들며 끊임없이 탐구하고 직진했던 인물로, 종교를 새로운 표현 방식으로 결합하고 자신의 죽음이후에야 실현될 기이한 기계들을 만들어 냈다. 부산현대미술관과 백남준아트센터가 공동기획한 백남준 회고전 《백남준, 백남준, 그리고 백남준》은 누구보다 미래를 선명하게 내다본 예술가에게 헌정하는 전시이다. 카카오톡과 페이스북, 인스타그램의 등장 전부터, 백남준은 대중매체가 다방향 커뮤니케이션으로 변화할 것이라고 내다본 최초의 예술가였다. 넷플릭스와 케이블, 유튜브가 나오기 오래전 백남준은 예술가들이 대양을 넘어 협력할 수 있는 위성 생중계를 최초로 실현했다. 예술에서 새로운 것이 모든 것을 의미하지는 않는다. 시간은 앞으로 나아가다가도 되돌아가고, 스타일은 반복되고, 재구성된다. 어떤 혁신들은 막다른 길이 되기도 한다. 하지만 그런 예외가 없는 혁신적인 인물을 꼽으라고 하면 백남준이지 않을까.
There has been no prophesy about today’s global web and media industries that is as accurate as the one made by Nam June PAIK in 1974. He was someone who constantly crossed back and forth over the line that divides art and science, inventing machines that gave religion a new mode of expression and would only be realized long after his death.
《Nam June PAIK, Nam June PAIK, and Nam June PAIK,》 a retrospective co-hosted with the Nam June PAIK Art Center, pays homage to an artist who saw the future clearer than anyone else. PAIK was the first artist to foresee mass media’s transformation by multi-directional communication, long before Facebook and Instagram. In a time before Netflix, cable television, and YouTube, PAIK was the first person ever to achieve cooperation among artists in New York, Paris, Germany, and South Korea via live satellite broadcast. In the world of art, “new” does not necessarily mean “everything.” Styles repeat themselves or are rearranged, and some innovations turn out to be dead ends. If I were asked to name one person who managed to avoid all of these exceptions, I would not be able to think of anyone other than Nam June PAIK.
