The english interview script is included.

Seoul Art Guide

Q. What is the most memorable exhibition of Korea in the past two years, and why?
A. I particularly enjoyed the exhibition “Minhwa and Court Painting of the Joseon Dynasty” at the Seoul Arts Centre in 2016. It was a great way to understand both history, culture and aesthetic value. The paintings of libraries looked like an early representation of the hard drive of ancient computers, old ways of transmitting knowledge: that made me think of the highly technological life we live now … In the field of contemporary art, many shows at MMCA have been an extraordinary experience for me: “When Art Becomes Liberty. The Egyptian Surrealists” at MMCA Deoksugung or the wonderful “Reenacting History” at MMCA Gwacheon are very good examples for different reasons. “Asian Diva” at Buk SeMA this past summer was a great show, too small though …

Q. You have mentioned that Korean art is lacking in narrative. Did you make any improvements?
A. Narratives cannot be made ppali-ppali… They are the product of long efforts where the scholarship and the accumulation of data must be combined with high creativity and elegance in the expression, through long processes. At MMCA, we created the department of research and publications, that is essential to fulfill this mission, although all curatorial practices are about creating narratives. “The Arrival of New Woman to be opened in December at MMCA Deoksugung is a very good example of that: through looking at the fine arts and popular culture and mass media, we pretend to bring together the work of artists that show how the representation of the female figure evolved through the 20th Century, and how fashion and aesthetics evolved under the Japanese occupation and the post-war U.S. influenced society. It is a parallel way to interrogate the meaning of Modernity in relation to feminism in a male-dominated world.

Q. You seem to have many episodes because there are many strange things such as Korean organizational culture. Is there anything you can introduce me to?
A. A. All cultures are different and I have been a foreign Director in other episodes of my life. My first experience as Director of a public institution was in Holland, where hierarchies are nearly irrelevant. In Korea, hierarchies are very vertical and strong.

Q. When was your first encounter with art?
A. I grew up in the island of Ibiza, where the second museum of contemporary art in Spain was opened in 1969. When I was attending high-school I would use the lunch time to visit exhibitions there. When I was a University student, I got into the arts by chance. In the mid 1980’s I met Joseph Kosuth and his then assistant, the artist Fareed Armaly, put me in contact with Dan Graham and Muntadas. Dan Graham put me in contact with Lawrence Weiner. Weiner brought me to John Baldessari and through Muntadas I met Krzysztof Wodiczko,… Since then, it never stopped: one artist always brought me to other artists …

Q. What is 'art' and 'art administration' for you?
A. I am a westerner and for me art is anything that an artist has identified as art, and that “functions” as art within the system. Art is what artists do and nowadays art is not limited to certain materials and techniques. Art is a territory of freedom, like rock-and-roll. The administration of art (or management) is a set of techniques that allow the art system to function.

Q. What are you trying to focus on as the director of the National Museum of Contemporary Art for the rest of your term?
A. The internationalization of the Korean art is one big priority but needs time and a lot of expertise and energy. The museum must plan its most important exhibitions three to five years in advance. Otherwise we cannot work internationally. And we must make the Korean art be understood within global culture … Koreans are also global citizens.
