‘백 투 더 퓨처’는 최근 5년간 수집된 소장품들을 집중 연구한 결과, 공성훈, 김범, 박이소 등 1990년대 시대전환기를 예술적 토양으로 삼아 한국 현대미술의 동시대적 양상을 드러낸 작가들의 작품이 다수 수집되었다는 점에 착안해 기획되었다.

한국 현대미술 동시대성의 맥락이 형성된 1990년대를 중심으로 1980년대 후반부터 2010년대까지를 상호 영향 범위로 설정하고, 1980년대 말 1990년대 초 작가적 정체성을 구축한 작가들의 작품 활동을 소개한다. 또한 20세기 말에서 21세기 초 아날로그와 디지털이 교차, 혼재하던 시기를 관통하며 성장하고 한국 미술사에 등장하여 현재 현대 미술계 주요 작가로 자리매김한 작가들의 작품도 함께 선보인다. ‘시대 변환과 미술 지형 변동’, ‘불일치의 활성화’, ‘이질성과 그 비평적 시공간’, 그리고 ‘미래 간섭 혹은 미래 개입’, 4개의 섹션으로 구성한다.

‘The Back to the Future’ exhibition was inspired  by acquisition- focused research spanning a five-year period. This brought to light numerous additions from artists such as KONG Sunghun, KIM Beom, and BAHC Yiso. Each were creatively nourished by the transitional period of the 1990s as they breathed new life into the Korean contemporary art world.

This exhibition focused on the 1990s as the decade in which contemporaneity became most established in the context of Korean contemporary art while also including works ranging from the late 1980s to the 2010s in its scope of influence. Many of the artists introduced developed their creative identities during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Viewers will also encounter the works of artists who grew up and made their entrance into the Korean art world in the late 20th and early 21st, that saw the intersection and coexistence of analog and digital.
