코오롱의 문화예술 나눔공간 스페이스K 서울은 미국 브루클린을 기반으로 활동하는 에디 마티네즈의 개인전을 개최한다. 《투 비 컨티뉴드(To Be Continued)》라는 제목으로 열리는 이번 전시는 구상과 추상을 자유롭게 넘나드는 작가의 작품세계를 2005년부터 현재까지 시기 및 주제별로 조명한다. 작가의 화면은 속도감 넘치는 선과 대담한 색상이 돋보이며, 일상에서 발견한 재료는 평평한 캔버스에 독특한 질감을 더한다. 새로운 시리즈를 포함해 드로잉과 회화 34점을 선보이는 이번 전시는 ‘끊임없이 그리기’로 일관하는 에디 마티네즈의 작업 방식에 주목한다. 작가의 시선을 끄는 주변의 물건들은 종이와 캔버스로 옮겨져 완전히 새로운 풍경으로 전환되는 한편, 반복적으로 그려진 모티프는 낯선 풍경에 일관성을 부여한다. 첫눈에 해석하기 어려운 형체들 사이로 서서히 드러나는 일상의 익숙한 물건들은 작가 개인의 경험을 경유해 우리의 상상을 자극한다.
Space K Seoul presents a solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based artist Eddie MARTINEZ (b.1977). The exhibition, titled 《To Be Continued》, sheds light on the artist’s oeuvre, which effortlessly fuses figuration and abstraction, from 2005 to the present, arranged both chronologically and thematically. His paintings are characterized by swift lines and bold colors, while everyday found materials add a unique texture to the flat canvases.
The exhibition features 34 drawings and paintings, including a new series, focusing on MARTINEZ’s practice of ‘constant drawing’. Surrounding objects that catch his eye are transferred onto paper and canvas and transformed into entirely new landscapes, while repeated motifs give a sense of coherence to unfamiliar landscapes. The familiar objects of everyday life that are gradually revealed among the shapes which may be difficult to interpret at first glance stimulate our imagination through the artist’s personal experience.
