60 Years of Korean Modern Art
Museum for Modern and Contemporary Art, 1972
The exhibition <60 Years of Korean Modern Art> was organised three years after the establishment of the MMCA in 1972 in the now non-existent branch of the Museum in Kyongbokgung Palace. It was a historical exhibition dedicated to discovering and examining the Korean modern art created between 1900 and 1960. It included works such as <Countryside Girl> by Lee Young-Il which was in the possession of Changdong Palace and which was included in the 8th Chosun Art Exhibition's special selection, Lee Ma-Dong's <People> which was included in the special selection of the 11th edition, Shim Hyeong-Gu's <Pose> which was displayed in the 18th edition etc. Pieces from the collections of Cheongwade (The Blue House), the National Assembly, Bank of Korea, Kansong Museum, Hongik University, and artists Lee Byeong-Cheol, Seol Won-Shik, Won Hyeong-Mok were also displayed.
“When I (Director Kim Dal-Jin) visited the exhibition on July 18th 1972 in my 3rd year of high school I densely wrote down on the pamphlet various notes and details such as the artists’ names, dates of birth and death. At that time I really could not have imagined that my memos will become such valuable historical documents. In those times the entry fee for Kyongbokgung Palace was 70 won, for the exhibition 50 won and the pamphlet cost 200 won. This exhibition was a turning point in my life, an awakening that made me realise that I, who had until then collected pictures of Western masterpieces, now had to work even harder to collect documents on modern Korean art.” - reminiscences the Director.
