Chosun Art Exhibition (CAE) was organised by the Governor-General of Korea once every year between 1922 and 1944 and was modeled on the Japanese Ministry of Culture Exhibition and international art exhibitions. At first it consisted of three sections: <Eastern Painting>, <Western Painting and Sculpture> and <Calligraphy and the Four Gracious Plants>. From the 11th edition in 1932 onward, the third section was renamed <Crafts and Sculpture>. The initial presence of the <Calligraphy and the Four Gracious Plants> section, which was not part of the Japanese Ministry of Culture Exhibition and the international art exhibitions, was attributed to the fact that many important figures from the calligraphy world such as Kim Don-Hui, Jeong Dae-Yu, Lee Do-Yeong, Kim Gyu-Jin had helped with the organisation of CAE. The annual event opened new doors for many artists, but as the years went by Japanese-influenced academism intensified.
In the years between 1922 and 1940 the exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue, but between 1941 and 1944, because of the war and the limited funds, it was reduced to a simple pamphlet.
Our museum has original copies of the catalogues of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th , 14th, 15th , 17th and 23rd editions and photocopies of volumes 1 to 19.
