Paintings of Shimjeong Ahn Jung-Shik
<Paintings of Shimjeong Ahn Jung-Shik> is a catalogue of paintings by Shimjeong Ahn Jung-Seok (1861-1919) from the late Chosun period. It bears no imprint at the back making it impossible to verify its year of print but it is generally understood that the book was compiled to serve as student book for his pupils and to accompany a retrospective exhibition in 1919 hosted by the Calligraphy Society. The copy we have contains 25 works depicting landscapes, historical figures, birds and animals.
Ahn Jung-Shik was a president of the Calligraphy Society, a figure linking Chosun's traditional painting with Korean modern and contemporary traditional artists. It is known that artists Ahn Geon-Young and Jang Seung-Eob of the school of Do Hwa-Seo had influence on his style together with the Shanghai and other schools with which he came in contact during the years he spent sightseeing in Japan and China.
<Paintings of Shimjeong Ahn Jung-Shik> is an invaluable source for investigation of his style.
