『조선미술사』는 1909년 베네딕트 수도회 신부로 조선을 방문한 안드레아스 에카르트가 20년간 조선에 체류하면서 조선미술과 건축을 실견하고 답사하여 연구한 결과물로서 1928년에 저자가 독일로 돌아간 후, 이듬해에 출간되었다. 에카르트는 서울 수도회가 설립한 교사양성소에서 한국어를 공부하였고 이후, 경성제국대학에서 언어와 미술사를 강의하면서 조선미술에 대한 연구를 심화시켰던 것으로 알려져 있다. 이 책은 당대의 미술사적 연구경향이었던 양식론의 입장에서 처음으로 조선미술에 대한 통사적 접근을 시도한 점에 그 사료적 가치가 크다. 서문에서 저자가 밝혔듯이, ‘조선미술은 존재하는가’라는 문제의식은 이 책의 근간을 이루는 주제개념이며, 마지막 결론에서 저자는 ‘조선미술의 특질’을 간결성(simpilicity)으로 규명하고 있다.
1929년 독일 라이프치히(Leipzig)와 영국 런던(London)에서 독일어판과 영어판이 동시에 출간되었고 506개의 도판, 8개의 삽화, 4개의 칼라도판 및 한국지도 1개에 이르는 풍부한 이미지 자료도 수록되었으며 텍스트분량은 총 225쪽에 이른다. 책의 구성은 저자서문에 이어, 한국어, 일본어, 중국어 발음 유의점, 도판소스, 칼라도판 리스트, 삽화 리스트, 흑백도판 리스트가 실려있고 본문은 한국미술사 총론, 파트1 건축, 파트2 조각과 탑, 파트3 불교조각, 파트4 회화, 파트5 도자기, 파트6 도자기 이외의 수공예품, 그리고 결론으로 구성되었다. 이어서 일반색인과 한자명이 병기된 인명색인, 그리고 흑백도판 506점이 책 말미에 배치되었다. 김달진미술자료박물관에 소장되어 있는 소장본은 내지에 영국 브래드포드 공공도서관(Bradford Public Library) 간인이 있는 점이 특기할만하다.『조선미술사』는 2003년에 열화당에서 독일어판을 완역하여『에카르트의 조선미술사』(권영필 옮김)로 출간되었다.

History of Korean Art
Andreas Eckardt, 1929
<History of Korean Art> (<Geschichte der koreanischen Kunst> in German) was written by Andreas Eckardt (1884-1974), a missionary from the Order of Saint Benedict, who lived in Chosun between 1909 and 1928 contemplating and exploring Korean art and architecture. The book was published a year after his return to Germany in 1928.
The author opens his prologue with the question 'Does Chosun art exist' and in the final section concludes with the reflection that it exists and its most distinct characteristic is its simplicity. Eckardt studied Korean language at Teachers Training Institute of the Order and lectured on language and art history at Kyongsong Imperial University where he continued his research into Chosun art.
The syntactic approach to Chosun art history used in the book exposes the influence of the Western philosophy of art research making the book all the more significant. Our museum has the German and English language editions. The English copy carries the unique seal of Bradford Public Library. In 2003 the book was translated in Korean by Kwon Young-Pil under the title <Eckardt's History of Korean Art> and published by Youlhwagand Publishing House.
Our museum also has <Collection of Korean Traditional Folktales> written by Andreas Eckardt in 1928.
