(Daily Survival in the Society of Materialism and Anonymity)’라고 씌어있었지만 그건 너무 광범위한 말이다.

More and more Korean contemporary art shows are taking place in the U.S. and Europe. So far, exhibitions in Europe and the U.S. were mainly focused on their art historical context. It seems now Europe and the U.S. realize that there exist contemporary art in other countries.
Although I was impressed by some works at the show ‘Doors Open’, I was disappointed with two things in general. First, it was hard for me to find out what the pieces have in common in terms of a theme. Secondly, it was not easy to read an explicit opinion from each artist.
First, the title of the exhibition 'Doors Open', even if it fits to open the visitor the doors of artists residence, is very vague.

Organizing a group show is not an easy affair, I agree, but a group exhibition is not acceptable when it only gathers young and emerging Korean artists if you cannot show anything in common. The curator has to work out a theme uniting all the artists and their propositions: the art pieces. The point is to avoid a superficial presentation. And that is exactly what happened: the exhibits title does not reveal any information about what the audience is going to see. In my opinion, an exhibitions title should be a short résumé of the exhibitions content. It should be a clear attraction not only for the people of the art world, but to a larger audience including people who are not from the art world. Even by reading the release on koreanculture.org, I am still not satisfied because 'daily survival in the society of materialism and anonymity' is a little bit too general. Therefore, I could barely see any theme other than young and emerging Korean artists. The curator should more than ever exercise the function of a mediator, a link between the artists (through their work) and the people, giving to the audience the keys of understanding.

Helping to understand starts from the beginning: the exhibitions title. Then comes the exhibitions architecture. I dont know if the term 'museography' exists in English, it is the way of arranging the artworks in the space, according - of course - to the visitor. This is another important point, because the artworks have 1.) to dialogue with the visitor right from the very first contact and 2.) to dialogue with themselves.

But, lets mention some artworks now:
The most impressive work for me was a video installation ‘Stadium Volume II’ by the artists group ‘Mioon’. Watching this projection in a model of Yankee stadium, I thought of French philosopher Michel Foucaults studies about society. The work immediately provoked a pressure in my body. I felt very intrigued. Am I the observer or am I the observed?
However, I could barely see any explicit opinion in most of the works. Kira Kim’s paintings remind me of French Renaissance or 17th century still-life paintings. His works are pop arts heritage in terms of its propositions of an objective vision of society. However, Kira Kim should go further than that. We are confronted with these problems in many other young artists today: stagnation, reinterpreting, repeating by modification, etc. But why do they create their works in that way? We don’t know - thats the secret of 'postmodernism'...
Doo-Jin Ahn’s floor installation consists of found materials and childrens toys. Does the artist take refuge in micro-architecture and childhood because he cannot get along with ‘the society of materialism and anonymity’? It’s too hesitating and vague again, weak.

So far, few Korean artists were introduced in the western art world. Maybe Nam June Paik and Ufan Lee? And vaguely Tschang-Yeul Kim, Bul Lee, Byung-Hun Min and Sung-Hy Shin? Too few considering the dynamic scene in Korean contemporary art. My last suggestion is that, therefore, it would be good for Korean art world if exhibitions of Korean contemporary art are open to the larger audience in terms of themes and the places the shows are shown.
