이 작업실은 피카소가 '게르니카' 작품을 할 때의 모습이다. Picasso painting Guernica, by Dora Maar.

피카소가 파리의 이 집에서 1937 년부터 1955 년까지 17년간 살았다는 기록이 남아있다. 파리 6구 그랑 오거스땅 7번지 - 7 Rue des Grands Augustins, 76006.

그다지 넓지도, 내부 인테리어가 잘 정리된 그런 작업실이 아니었다. 블럭벽돌이 그대로 보이고 유리창은 깨져 바깥이 내다 보인다. 바닥은 오랫동안 청소를 하지 않아 물감이 덕지덕지 굳어 있다.

이 작업실에서 세계미술사에 남은 게르니카 작품이 완성되었다.

화가의 작업실은 운동장 만큼 넓거나, 내부가 잘 정리되고 단장되어 호화롭지 않더라도 그의 정신이 살아있고 예술혼이 번뜩이면 그곳에서 대작이 태어나는 것이다.

우리는 자칫 대가의 화실이 넓고 멋질 것이란 환상에 빠지는 우를 범할 수 있다.

환경이 좋아야 대작이 태어나고 세계미술사에 길이 남는 것이 아님을 우리는 깊이 깨달아야만 한다.

It was in the immense attic room of this townhouse that Picasso painted Guernica.  It was here that he lived out the trying war years of the Occupation, alternately courted and harrassed by the Germans, to no avail. (Once, offered extra heating coal by a German official, Picasso put off the bribe attempt with the retort, ' A Spaniard is never cold!'   It was also in this house that he met the young twenty-something painter Francoise Gilot, beginning a nearly ten-year relationship that brought a long period of domestic tranquility to Picasso's life, inspired much art, and produced two children, Claude and Paloma.  Francoise left Picasso in 1953, and not long afterward, Picasso permanently left the studio on rue des Grands-Augustins.  Another woman would take Francoise's place, and other studios--La Galloise, La Californie, and finally, Notre-Dame-de-Vie would be added to that long roster of buildings immortalized by their famous tenant.  Yet there is something especially haunting and resonant about rue des Grands-Augustins that, for me anyway, the other places do not possess.  Perhaps it's the golden glow cast by the auras of two great artists, Balzac and Picasso, whose names are forever bound across the centuries with this place, this street.  http://ineedartandcoffee.blogspot.com/2013/04/balzacs-ghost-picasso-at-7-rue-des.html
