The face of avant-garde, Kim Kulim

Gim Jong-gil / art critic

Kim Kulim (1936~ ): His career started in earnest with his private exhibition at Daegu  in 1958 at the Public Information Center in Daegu. Though having had his start in traditional fine arts, it was in 1969 that Kim was catapulted into the forefront of Korean avant-garde art. In the same year he directed “Angle 362”, presented bodypainting as well as Korea’s first experimental film [The Meaning of 1/24 Second] and first mail art [The Relic of Mass Media]. He headed the ‘Fourth Group’ formed in 1970, was a member of the Avant-Garde Association, and continues to this day in his restless experiments.

In 1969, at the age of 34, the young Kim Kulim(1936~) set off the avant-garde. The reality of then is not so much different from how it is now. The severity of the Korean War’s aftermath left no reality to speak of. When the Japanese imperialist colonialism ended, ideologies from both left and right flooded into the country, and in the wake of the Korean war, the country faced a tragic reality of poverty.  The 4.19 revolution helped put an end to Rhee Syngman’s antiquated guided democracy, yet the roots still remained and reemerged in the form the 5.16 coup d’état.

That reality seethed with unreality and surreality, and it was thus absurd. The military regime compounded colonialism, ideology, war, poverty, guided democracy, the coup, and absurdity altogether to give rise to a distorted modernization. The landscape of modernization seemed quite passable, yet the untreated wounds festered. These wounds lay outside(in the landscape of urbanization and industrialization), and the landscape much longed for was within the hearts of the people. Kim’s experimental film, <The Meaning of 1/24 Second> is a weaving of Korea’s reality in 1969.

The First Avant-Garde Experimental Film

Film represents reality in 1/24 of a second. 24 cuts must run in 1 second to resemble the time frame of reality. Faster or slower, the film becomes either unreality or surreality. One wonders what 1/24 of a second meant to Kim, who attempted to see the ‘here and now’ back then.
His films repeats the images of the railings of an overpass, 60 flash cuts, a scene of one showering, a man yawning, and billows of smoke. If the landscape of Seoul that the soaks through and bounces off the railings is the naked face of ‘urbanization’, the showering scene, the man, and the smoke would be slivers of the modern man nested in the city, living like hands of a clock.

Those days were brought into a montage Kim created on 16mm film with no sound. Without an unraveling of a narrative, each scene is a narrative on its own, while at the same time also a fragmentation. The film has no protagonist, no supporting character, but only a tapestry of reality’s warp and weft—perhaps this is why it is recorded as Korea’s first avante-garde experimental film.

The hope that the ‘delightful happening’ of the avant-gardist hurled.

Kim’s avant-garde intent to traverse all of fine-art, music, theatre and film started in earnest in 1970. Events and accidents that send rumbles through an era were and are regular menu offered by weeklies. The headlines of the May 27th issue of <Weekly Kyunghyang> read “Sprightly Youth on the busy streets in broad daylight,” “An unusual ‘happening’ by three ‘avant-garde artists’” catch one’s attention. The corresponding article reads, “Unusual avant-garde artists have appeared, sprinkling hemp powder, torn condoms, and white envelopes with randomly written numbers on passersby, or flying colorful balloons from an overpass, calling it ‘the expansion of infinite art.’” What in the world was happening?

On May 15 in the same year, at around 3 p.m., Kim Kulim, Bahng Geoji, Cheong Chanseung embarked on their respective happenings in front of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences of Seoul National University. Kim prepared 201 envelopes on which was written “Open envelope number 1 at 6:40 p.m., May 15th, 1970.” 20 of them were sent to ‘renowned critics in Korea’ and the remaining 181 envelopes were distributed in person to the students at the college.

There were three additional envelopes within each envelope. Number 1 reads: “Mix this powder into 20cc of cold water, repeat your name 3 times, drink the mixture, gather yourself, then open envelope number 2 at 8:50 sharp.” Number 2 reads: “Wear the condom on your genitalia, then open envelope number 3 at 9:00 sharp.” Number 3 reads: “Take 4 deep breaths through the hole in the paper attachment. Look toward the center of the sky above Namsan, then open envelope number 4 at 9:05 sharp.” There is no envelope number4. Instead there is a new envelope, and on it the instruction reads: “Perform your ablutions at 9:00 p.m., May 15th, 1970. Take this pill with a cup of cold water. Five minutes later, bow facing east, then stand in the opposition direction and look at the sky toward the hole made in the colored paper. You will have an experience you have never had before.”

The purpose of this happening was “to deal with the psychological questions and the idealistic answers of humankind with the focus on our sense of taste.” I believe that the operative intention was to plant a kind of “pillar of the heart” of hope in the hearts of people, ever wavering to and fro in the waves of reality always out of mesh.

Hemp is not only harmless to the body, but it has no hallucinatory effects. The declarative “Look at the sky; you will have an experience you have never had before” is like the metaphor in the title of the book “The small ball the dwarf tossed” by the novelist Cho Saehee: it points to the world of dwarves for whom even looking at the sky, out of reach to begin with, is difficult.

Just like a kind word from the doctor is more healing than the medicine, Kim’s instructive words do not ring as much “absurd pranks” as “delightful happenings” meant to inspire hope. This work is recorded to be the first mail art along with “The Relics of Mass Media”(1969) co-created by Kim Chaseop.

How does land, and not a canvas, become art?

At 11 A.M., April 11th, 1970, there was a man dressed in a black suit making slashes on a slanted river bank along Salgoji Bridge that leads to Han River’s Ttukseom. The slashes were made into a comb-pattern, and skipping an entire plan, the man started a fire. As if charred by fire juggling, the inclined plane that stretched 22 meters in width and 100 meters in length blazed up. The plane left intact and that plane set on fire came together to create a huge pattern of a triangular pyramid.

Those who arrived later saw how land, and not the canvas, became art. His work was new in many ways. It was a demonstration of the ‘de-materialization’ of art in the sense that bronze—the main material of canvas and sculpture—was not used. This was because he perfectly presented the concept of ‘land art’ that spoke of the possibility of land becoming a kind of art. Richard Long, one of the best known British land artists, have worked with burning, but it came only recently. The burnt area and the unburnt area both showed fresh shoots sprouting around May, leaving both areas indiscernible. By the summer and fall, grass was already overgrown, and its height and color were difficult to distinguish.

Breaking from conventions, prodding the other side of the world

Kim believe that everything did not veer too far away from the principle of yin and yang. What happens within our sight and beyond our sight were explicable in terms of yin and yang, and the same went for reality and unreality. Recorded as two of his first works from 1958, <moon, mountain, lake> and <moon night> were paintings that went in tandem, each corresponding to yin and yang respectively. Looking at the mountain and moon, the black and white of the house, and the fullness and emptiness of the space, it is easy to infer that his point of departure was yin and yang. Yin and yang developed into phenomenon and traces and came around again to yin and yang, a revolution of his aesthetic idea that is in accordance to the principles of the birth and death of all things.

He put different sized ice cubes into three big red buckets, put tracing paper the size of the ice cubes, and showed the process of their melting and evaporation in his 1970 work <From phenomenon to traces>, one that led to his works <Shovel> and <Broom> in 1974, <Metal Chair> in 1975, <Chair> in 1979. This progression deepened his works and brought clarity to his concepts.

If the ice cube work showed the traces of inactivity, his objet works were about maximum human activity to minimize temporality. A string of such works formed a kind of allegory, eventually developing into an unfathomable variety of works.

His thoughts would restlessly shoot up. Works of conceptual photography, sewing on the canvas, body painting, street fashion show, costume lighting on the stage, video art—all these experimental works are enough to present a paradigm for the avant-garde. He reached as far as participating in the first Seoul International Modern Music Festival held at the National Theater, performing a “happening where a man would beat another man with a baton while the Stockhausen’s electronic music played against the ‘harmony’ of ‘light.’” He also directed Paik Nam June’s <Composition> that included Cheong Chanseung and Cha Myeonghee as performers.

On June 20th, 1970, Kim created the “Fourth Group” along with his colleagues. Kim was the head of the group, adopting the idea of ‘incorporeality’ as their guiding aesthetic concept. The Fourth Group included 13 members who ranged from artist, costume designer, pantomime to reporter, screenwriter, musician and Buddhist monk. It was truly an original and eccentric group that came about. In the year-long span of the group’s activity, Kim was able to prepare the draft for his art world, and his avant-garde spirit remains restless today. Breaking away from conventions and prodding the other side of the world, Kim as the face of the avant-garde has always had the machine thought and white wings accompany him.

Kim’s aesthetic algorithm

Started in the spring of 2012, <SeMA Color Exhibition> by Seoul Museum of Art includes young artists (blue), middle-aged artists (gold), and elder artists (green). 2011 presented the works by the young and middle-aged artists, and in 2012 the first exhibition of the works by elder artists was held. It must have taken SeMA considerable deliberation to choose the first of its elder artist. Whether dead or alive, the first of SeMA’s program was to be differentiated from the young and middle-aged artists—who are chosen by their contemporary activities in the vanguard—in the sense that

Differentiated from the young and middle-aged artists, who are chosen according to their contemporary activities in the vanguard, the first of SeMA’s ‘green’ exhibition would invite academic and critical reflection of the artist’s artistic accomplishments. This is enough reason for both the museum and the artist to feel a sense of burden. SeMA’s final choice was Kim. In fact, it had to be Kim. Without any formal education in art, Kim’s works in the 1960s and 70s were in themselves an aesthetic event that jolted Korean contemporary art.

Kim Kulim the avant-gardist

Though Kim’s experimental work started from the mid-1960s, it was through spearheading the Fourth Group in 1970 that he put all strongholds and authorities of the art establishment to death and became the indomitable artist that was ‘disharmonious’ with the world all his life. It is incorrect to assess his career as one that could not compromise or adapt to the world. Those who have had even the slightest encounter with him would know that he the most natural man of disharmony. Being uncompromising and disharmonious are two different things. As mentioned earlier, the disharmony of Kim Kulim as the artist derives from his refusal to compromise with the strongholds and authorities of the art establishment. His disharmonious spirit is, paradoxically, symbolic of the avant-garde. He is a stranger from a foreign world who completed the aesthetics of disharmony by estranging a world that was ‘already made.’ This is why many of his works are often described as the ‘first’ of their kinds.

The curator of SeMA seemed to have imagined the space production of the curation through the strategy of reconstituting Kim’s aesthetics as an algorithm. The period that was to be reconstituted was not all of Kim’s art career but the 1960s and 70s when his aesthetic event was at its peak. It was in this period that he organized vanguard art groups such as <Painting 68>, <A.G. Group>, and <The Fourth Group>. He also presented happening, installation art, mail art, body painting, land art, conceptual art, and experimental film as a way to resist the loss of the avant-garde spirit caused by the coercive anti-communist military dictatorship, against aesthetic conformism, and the academism nurtured by Korea’s art exhibitions.

Belonging to no particular genre, Kim’s practical artistic activities were all enough to cause major reverberations. The curator structured the works during his <Painting 68> period, the happening projects of <The Fourth Group>, and the conceptual art ‘as event’ presented by <A.G. Group> into algorithmic lines. And where the lines converge and diverge according to territories of events, period, works, and behavior, a kind of ‘absence’ started to occur. His installation art and experimental works of conceptual and logical events remained only as records or were completely lost. Some remained incomplete due to circumstantial constraints.

By displaying those works as representations, repeats, or reproductions, the vacant territory of the algorithm was filled in. In terms of the time span, this period stretches across the mid-1960s and the mid-70s, and in terms of Korea’s political history, it spans from the anti-communist nationalist policy of the Third Republic, the economic development policy, the Saemaeul Movement, and all the way to the birth of the Yushin regime brought about by the Yushin constitution. And in terms of art history, the period includes the construction of the memorial sculptures for the Patriotic Martyrs Building Committee and the embarking of the pictorialization project of national records and the emergence of monotone painting.

Montage of the magic lantern

The curator went back 40 years and brought in all the evidence of the events that the young Kim planned and implemented, entered them into his imaginary museum, and created a magic lantern montage. Several works were reproduced and restored in more than 40 years, works that included: the first experimental film <The Meaning of 1/24 second> made in 1969, publicly screened for the first time in 2001, after which its original copy was lost; the first electric art <Space Structure> submitted for the <Painting 68> exhibition; <Situation> submitted for the 1971 Paris Biennale; <Mediative Item 2> that was part of the <A.G. Group Exhibition>. The light art <Space Structure 69> was reproduced with acrylic instead of its original material vinyl.

<From Phenomenon to Traces>, an installation art in the form of covering a huge 3m x 3m x 3m block of ice, was planned in 1969 but was completed only recently in 2013. <Civilization, Woman, Tone>(1969), shot on 8mm film, made its appearance in 45 years. The curator placed projectors all around the exhibition space to evoke the magic lantern montage. Some projectors actually projected some images, while others existed only conceptually. If we consider Kim’s artistic world as “aged yet not shabby, timeworn yet not stale,” possessing the vitality of constant creativity, the projector that shows the montage may perhaps be the ‘magical illusion’ where Kim and his audience meet.

The curation of the imaginative museum

An easy way to artificially construct an algorithm is to structure a space composed of long and short corridors, rooms along the corridors, gardens or courtyards. The space would partitioned by windows, pillars, walls, and corridors, simultaneously connecting and attaching it.

This method may also be most suitable for the space to constitute Kim’s algorithm. But the curator does not physically separate wall between works, corridors, gardens, and courtyards that lead one work to another.

The exhibition space on the first floor of SeMA was treated as a completely open space with not one partition. The way the works were placed within that space evoked the image of André Malraux surrounded by pages from his forthcoming book Le musée imaginaire de la sculpture mondiale.

The audience would walk among the works, pass by or stop to either identify the evidence of Kim’s aesthetic event or simply mull over it, connecting the algorithm on their own. Turn left or right, start from the center wander left and right—it does not matter. In the end, the audience is bound to identify the entirety of the space from whatever point they stand. The curator was also kind enough to attach a detailed log of the aesthetic event next to the corresponding work. It even displayed the interweaving of Kim’s artistic chronology and Korea’s socio-political and art history.

Kim’s artistic world is, like the art critic Im Geunjoon has noted, “an experimental art of multilateral transformation that repudiates self-referential identity.” Even to this day, he remains restless, continuing to explore new art to practice disharmony with existing aesthetics and the world.

The living language of his innumerable drawings, photographs, paintings, sculptures, installations and media is sprightly. The curator traced Kim’s aesthetics to its birthplace and reconfigured the aesthetic events that he set off. But the real significance of the exhibition lies in bringing Kim’s aesthetics into the realm of art history and criticism for serious consideration.

The catalogue published along with the exhibition is filled with academic research and criticism as controversial as Kim’s works themselves. Such research on the first generation of contemporary Korean art will foster our knowledge of how our art encountered the West, how artistic subjectivity was gained in the encounter, and what today’s contemporariness signifies. It is worth mentioning that guiding principle of SeMA’s programming that allowed the museum to choose its first invited artist someone who stood antithetical to mainstream Korean art history during the 60s and 70s is an event in itself that corrected the lopsided characteristic of Korean art history.

The murder of the subject, the cleansing of death

The performative attitude of ‘yin and yang’ that Kim so eagerly investigated articulated the shadows of the other side of reality as the aesthetics of disturbance, while also leaving the shadows as they are, expressing them as disasters that do not know its meaning. The project of the ‘aesthetic’ event are different from the events because it must satirize and symbolize, become a gravitational field whose admonition elucidates and jolts that very core of disaster.

When he slashes the bank along the Han River and set the land on fire, what encountered at the site of the aesthetic events was the ROTC in military training. The site where ‘phenomenon’ was to be planned would have been perceived seasonal customs, but the backdrop of his ‘burning’ was the agricultural practice intended to kill bugs. The aesthetic issue here is the first land art event. But on the other side of it lies the ‘traces’ of burning the bugs and allowing the sprouting of shoots by the impact of the burn.

Whether in politics, in art, or in reality, they all reeked of bugs and worms, and the formation of the Fourth Group was an act of putting the establishment of culture and art to death. Kim’s aesthetics was one of bringing about the avant-garde event, and the arrow of this project would always flew into reality to create a spark, its rumbling lightning storm being telegraphed through megaphones. Just because the sound of light has been translated into the sound of words does not mean that what rings like a lion’s roar suddenly becomes comprehensible to the public’s ear. At that time, it was only comprehensible to the extent of being vanguard happenings that occupied gossip sections of magazines. Now, it is undeniably the avant-garde of Korean art history.

The incarnation of osmosis

Since his first solo exhibition in 1958, Kim’s gravitational field has not diminished a bit, its elucidative power evermore deft. Terrorism, far-right nationalism, boat people, the Sewol ferry, the calamity of dictatorship are in themselves illegalities, remaining undead despite the jolt at their core. Yet turning the negative into a positive cannot be a solution. Only by setting a counter fire of paradoxical shock can reposition the future of eternity into the present’s homeostasis. It is only then that we can welcome future as a reality rather than an illusion. The paradox of negativity is one aspect presented in Kim’s works, and that aspect is an aesthetic form most characteristic of Kim.

His aesthetics has always been about the process, thus the outcome remaining open-ended. His “gate of the pure phenomenon of everything(衆妙之門) is a becoming that has always been open, never once having closed. <Yinyang—Tomb> and <Yinyang—Boat> presented in this exhibition are one substance of chaosmose that takes the 46 year process of the flower coffin of the funeral of the Fourth Group. The flower coffin that contained art endlessly came about and changed. Not so different from the becoming in nirvana which is rooted in the consciousness of death, it is the flower, rupture, well of the same body, same spirit, blossoming through the dichotomy of yin and yang.

In the channel/well that connects this world to that, chaos and cosmos are crossbred to deepen the world(it is a reality always reflected, thus illusive), yet the ‘subject’ of those being crossbred is multi-natured, collective, remaining in a mechanical state that refuses reterritorialization. Felix Guattari saw that the mistake of the machine that endlessly connects and disconnects at the cross point of the interior and exterior and its multi-natured characteristic that cannot be reduced into one voice as well its collective proliferation lies in the neglect of osmosis(osmose).

What Kim so closely questioned was perhaps the incarnation of osmosis that  communicates with one another beyond chaos. The incarnation of the way in which aesthetics osmotically goes between the reality of chaos and the reality of cosmos lies in the aestheticization of the reality imbued in everyday objects, and it was the concept of this object that Kim constantly collaged.

The variegated images of the desiring objects and the cold dead body of a Syrian refugee boy washed into the shore are rays of darkness that push reality far and beyond. The pieces of the torn body in <Yinyang—Tomb> silently demonstrates the ‘murder of the subject’ that turns the saving of the becoming to the murder of the disappearing. The boy, not suitable to become establishment art, was in essence killed in neglect. This is an event that also goes to show how much the reductive subject of Freud and Lacan is a product of a poor symbology. The desiring machine has spoiled even further, and the spoiled subject does not hesitate to carry out the act of terror that ends up killing oneself.

In Chaosmosis, Guattari argues for an active and self-generative subject(sexuality)’s change and the osmosis between heterogeneous things. Osmosis is not the result but a condition, a direction of sorts, to bring about a new something. Then how is an independent subjectivity to be created? He notes that this is done not only through the facing of a new expressive subject-matter but the construction of the complexities of subjectivation that is the plural exchange among the individual, the group and the machine. He also argued that the subjectivity crystallized in the structural complexities advanced not from the dimensions of ‘already there’ but from a kind creation, that the grafting of mutations that in themselves are a kind of aesthetic paradigm works in the same way.

The voice that possesses

<Yinyang—Boat>(2016). There is a tilted boat in the sky reflected in the well. Titled in the sky, the boat is anchored, and the eviscerated corpse is left only in bones. The existence of the boat has been wrecked in the backdrop of the temporality of the sky.

In the way that the critic Kim Namsoo quoted the philosopher Han Byung-chul to explicate
The “absolute/constant) way(常道)” in “道可道非常道” from Tae Te Ching is not the ‘eternal way.’ For us, the way always belongs to time(sky). The constant way, the way that goes along with time is the one truth. Therefore the aesthetics of the boat and the sky relies on the constancy of existence-temporality. It is not an ‘already there’ but the reality of an existence that belongs to an ‘already always’. Zen points directly to the real; it does not depend on an illusion to transcend reality. The constancy the points directly to the real may be the aesthetics that connects the temporality of ‘here’ with transcendence and eternity.

The anchored <Yinyang—Boat> may be a wreck covered in darkness. Take a look at the ‘shadow’ of the wrecked boat tilted under the thick shadow under the blue sky and white clouds. The visual perception of the audience will recall a fantasy of a ‘bright’ sky that they commonly saw in the works filled with everyday images. The myth of the well locates the site of the gushing myth in the well, thereby symbolize the well as the ‘ideal channel’ through which one communicates with the world of god. There is, however, a premise that a straight burst of ‘light-flash’ of transformation/metamorphosis bursts in that channel. When one thing metamorphizes into another, that ‘light’ becomes sacred.

It was this sacredness that Kim turned into the darkness of secularization. The site of the well under the bright sky is neither ideal or utopian. It is a plainly secular dystopia, a ‘bottom’ on which nothing can be projected. What he is surveying is a kind of futility of desires that perceive this fake sky as a ‘celestial well’. This is why the temporality he presents may only be a phantom that is neither fake nor real. The works are installed on the first floor and the lower ground floor of Arario Gallery. Interestingly enough, the installation of <Yinyang—Boat> on the lower ground floor reminds one of being inside a ‘tomb—coffin.’ The paradox of the imagining the wreck happening something in some kind of life and death and the perception that the shadow cast over the boat may be ‘real’ is also present in the placement of the work within the exhibition space. Another kind of disaster lies within the shadow of the tilted boat.

Both Jesus and Buddha warned against the poison of greed. A person who fails to discern the anguish that comes from greed and falls to its poison is no different from a bestial being.
Occupying the first floor of Arario Gallery, <The Traces of Life and Death>--his solo exhibition in 2016 (Aug. 30~Oct. 16)—is a simile for the rawness of that bestiality.

My focus was on the installation art composed of a bone fragment of a person trapped in a rock, a snake, and white cloth. ‘Goh(knot)’ is an instrument used in the shaman ritual for cleaning a dead person’s soul. The untying of the knot cleanses ‘death.’ But in this work, ‘goh’ seems to be untied already. Shouldn’t that mean that it is not merely a posture of despair toward the pessimism of reality? There must be the voice of god that possesses human beings.
