Recording State Rites in Words and Images provides an engaging and in-depth exploration of the large corpus of court statutes compiled during the Joseon dynasty of Korea. The term uigwe, commonly translated as “royal protocols,” is the name given to the collection of nearly four thousand books that were commissioned and written to document the customs, rituals, rules, protocols, and ceremonial practices of the Joseon dynasty. 서울에서 출생하여 서울대학교 미술대학 회화과를 졸업하고 미국 University of California, Berkeley에서 동양미술사 석사학위를, Princeton University에서 박사학위를 취득하였다. 덕성여자대학교 교수 및 박물관장을 역임하고 1989년부터 한국정신문화연구원 교수로 재직하며 동 한국학대학원장을 역임하였다. 현재 한국학중앙연구원 명예교수이다. 한국미술사학회장, 국사편찬위원, 미술사 학술지 Archives of Asian Art의 편집위원 등을 역임하였다. 

주요 저서로는 『어진의궤와 미술사: 조선국왕 초상화의 제작과모사』(2012), 『가례도감의궤와 미술사: 왕실 혼례의 기록』, Korean Landscape Painting: Continuity and Innovation Through the Ages(2006),『조선시대 그림속의 서양화법』(2000), Fragrance, Elegance, and Virtue: Korean Women in Traditional Arts and Humanities, 『우리 옛 여인들의 멋과 지혜』(2002/2007), 『내가 본 세계의 건축』(2004) 등이 있고, 번역서로는 『일본회화사』(秋山光和 原著)가 있다. 또한 외규장각의궤 반환 및 의궤연구 공로를 인정받아 국민훈장 동백장(2011. 9.)을 수훈하였다.

Yi Song-mi is professor emerita of art history at the Academy of Korean Studies in Seongnam, South Korea. Her books include Searching for Modernity: Western Influence and True-View Landscape in Korean Painting of the Late Chosŏn Period and Korean Landscape Painting: Continuity and Innovation through the Ages.
