Biographies of Chosun Calligraphers
Yoshida Eizaburo, 1920
<Biographies of ChosunCalligraphers> is a collection of the short biographies of five hundredcalligraphists arranged according to Chinese character, the number of brushstrokes in their family name, pseudonym etc. It spans 115 pages and includesnames consisting of 1 to 29 strokes. The 99-page appendix correlates Chosun’schronology with that of China, Japan and the West. The book starts with arecommendation from Soho Kakuto and a preface from the author and concludeswith a list of 23 consulted sources. In the preface, the author Yoshida Eizaburostates that he started collecting and translating the biographies ofcalligraphers who lived between Shilla and Chosun periods while he was workingon his book <Chosun Records>.
The copy of the book currently in our possession is remarkable in thatit has Lee Kyeong-Seong’s stamp of ownership.
