이승택(1932- )은 한국 실험미술을 대표하는 작가로 1950년대 이후 현재까지 설치, 조각, 회화, 사진, 대지미술, 행위미술을 넘나들며 왕성한 작품 활동을 해오고 있다. ‘이승택-거꾸로, 비미술’은 독자적 예술세계로 한국 현대미술의 전환을 이끈 이승택의 60여 년 작품세계를 새롭게 조망하고자 마련한 대규모 회고전이다.
이번 전시에서는 미술-비미술, 물질-비물질, 주체-대상의 경계를 끊임없이 가로지르며 자신만의 예술세계를 구축해온 이승택 작품의 다시 읽기를 시도한다. 특히 1960년대 주요 작품들을 재제작해 비조각을 향한 작가의 초기 작업을 되짚어보고 작가의 예술세계 전반에 내포된 무속적 의미를 새롭게 조명한다. 무속은 이승택이 서구 근대 조각 개념을 탈피하여 비조각의 세계, 작가가 ‘거꾸로’라고 명명한 이질성의 세계로 나아가는 출발점이었다. 또한 이승택이 초기 작업부터 선보인 사진 매체를 활용한 다양한 작품들, 특히 사진과 회화가 결합된 일명 ‘사진-회화’를 통해 작가만의 거꾸로 미학을 새롭게 조명한다.
LEE Seung taek (b.1932) is a representative figure in Korea experimental art who continued to produce works of art spanning installation, sculpture, photography, land art, and performance art since the 1950s until today. LEE Seung taek’s ‘Non-Art: The Inversive Act’ is a large-scale retrospective that aims to revisit the sixty-year career of LEE, who has played a pioneering role in transforming the Korean contemporary art scene with his unique artistic values.
This exhibition also attempts to reexamine the work of LEE Seung taek who has built on an unique artistic world of his own by ceaselessly traversing the boundaries of art versus non-art, materials versus non-material as well as subject verses object. LEE’s major works from the 1960s are revisited to explore LEE’s works produced in the early stages of his career while newly shedding light on the shamanistic values entailed in his overall art world. Shamanism was the beginning of the world of non-sculpture where LEE moved away from the modern sculptural concepts of the West towards the world of heterogeneity deemed by him as “inversive.” The exhibition also shed light on many of LEE’s works that utilize the photographic medium dating back to the early days of his career, and in particular LEE’s “photo picture,” a combination of photographs with other paintings, through which the artist’s inversive aesthetics can be newly revisited.
