이응노미술관의 2015년 소장품전인 ‘이응노의 조각 : 공간을 열다’ 전시는 도불 이후 1960-80년 사이에 제작된 고암의 조각 작품을 집중적으로 조명한다. 고암은 조각보다도 회화 작업에 주력한 화가였고 그의 주요 예술적 업적 역시 회화 분야에 집중해 논의되어 왔지만, 그의 예술적 요체인 ‘추상’이라는 개념과 연계해 볼 때 조각 역시 그의 일관된 미의식을 드러내는 중요한 장르라 볼 수 있다.

이번 소장품전은 고암의 미공개작을 포함해 작품 125여 점을 소개하며, 고암의 조각예술 흐름을 10년 단위로 구분해 양식적·의미적 변화과정을 연대기적으로 조명했다. 아울러 그의 조형의식이 회화와 상보 관계를 이루며 변천해 온 역사에 주목했다. 또한 고암의 부인인 박인경 여사가 기증한 조각 작품 57여 점이 이 전시를 통해 최초로 공개된다. 이 작품들은 제작 시기, 장르, 기법 등 제각기 다양한 특성을 가지고 있기 때문에 고암의 예술세계를 조망하는 사료로서 부족함이 없는 작품들이다.

이번 소장품전은 조각을 통해 고암의 예술 여정을 추적해 볼 수 있는 귀중한 기회를 제공할 것이다.

This exhibition is an event with a special focus on the sculptural practice of Lee Ungno between the 1960s and ‘80s. Although Lee was known primarily for his abstract paintings, which contributed the most to his legacy, it is essential to look at his sculpture as well in order to understand his art, as sculpture was an important medium that allowed Lee to deepen his ‘abstract’ practice. 

The exhibition will offer a rare opportunity with its chronological display to go through his nearly thirty years career as a sculptor after moving to France. Displayed works are grouped together by decade to help discern how Lee pursued sculpture in terms of style and content, and consider how his sculpture developed alongside his painting. 

Ultimately, through an exploration into his sculpture, the exhibition will help visitors discover what defines Lee’s art. Luckily, this exhibition will be a special occasion to explore the widest range of his work in sculpture, with over 57 sculptures that have never before been seen in Korea, thanks to the donation from the artist’s widow Park Inkyeong to our museum.
