“I would frequently encounter economic hardship that would hinder the continuance of my business. I even experienced death-like fear. However, I am trying to spread my artistic wings to a beautiful world of dreams. Do you have a dream?”
This was in the headlines of Arario Museum’s website, as CI Kim accomplished his life-long dream: to establish an art museum. Kim’s He stressed the concept of “pain” and “dream,” mentioning how this was his impetus and his definition. His “habitual” phrase “do you have a dream” has been coined as his slogan.
Using his pain as a motivation, CI Kim is currently Asia’s top collector, creating his own dynasty by collecting 4000+ art pieces from modern artwork collection. By ruling over department stores, multiplex, restaurants, and bus terminals, he established five art museums (currently four) in Seoul and Jeju, along with four galleries in Cheonan and Shanghai, marking him the “modern art deity.” Annually, art-related media always put his name up the top 200 art collecting list, and even grabbed Wall Street Journal’s attention. Although he received some slander for even participating as an artist, CI Kim was not bothered. Also, he asked, “Did you ever tackle art like me?”
Having a unique sense and a vast array of creativity, Kim was never conforming to his peers from a young age. He didn’t give one piece of his attention to his surroundings, and was extremely focused on his interests, and his interests only. After his third trial, he finally got accepted to Kyunghee University, majoring in economics. After his military service, he found himself being jobless and unmotivated, causing his mother to assign him to work in Cheonan Bus Terminal. Despite the large sums of debt prior to his presence, he quickly regained the business, and was able to thrive. Prospering as he made six figures yearly, he was able to take control of the entire terminal. Ten years later, he moved the terminal from Cheonan to Sinbu-dong, as he bought a 66,000〖m^2〗^property there. Despite everyone calling this a “over-investment,” he researched and carefully thought out this terminal by travelling to Europe and USA and modeling their spacious and multi-plex components.
As an art collector, CI Kim is frequently asked as to how he only selects good artwork. His collection was well-formed, and he attributes these qualities for success. First, he did not let what others said get to him, but rather follow his instinct. He gave himself maximum 5 minutes to decide his artwork, but mostly it took him 3 to 4 seconds. This can be seen in his encounter in Art Basel in Hong Kong a few years ago. During its VIP opening, CI Kim experienced ecstasy while observing Hell by Jake and Constantinos “Dinos” Chapman. It was told that the price of the painting was estimately $90,000 and there was already a scheduled buyer at the moment willing to buy the piece at a 15% discount, causing the staff to recommend a different artwork. However, Kim was convicted, as he proclaimed that he would buy the artwork with “no discount.” One of his workers even stated that he shouldn’t be so urgent, for he could get a 10% discount. However, there was absolutely nothing to stop him from acquiring the piece. Currently, the painting is nearly nine times the price when he first bought it, being around $750,000.
Unlike other collectors that are careful and gentle, Kim is very head-on with how carried himself. Any artwork that contains the artist’s spirit or artwork that is impactful and distinct, he would take it in his hands despite the price. This behavior caused him to experience a lot of trial and error in his early stages, for he would buy artwork that were imposters or the artwork’s quality itself was terrible. He was especially interested in modern art, with painters like Woonbo Kim Ki-chang, causing him to buy his work. However after he found out the artwork was fake, he realized the importance of researching artwork, causing him to study distinctions in real and fake paintings.
However, his passion for contemporary art flourished on his business trip to LA MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) in 1987, where he was baffled with the bizarre artwork in a large area. He also gained interest when he visited the Dea:Beacon, where he declared to set his collection to be based on contemporary pieces, and he travelled all over the world to find pieces. His collection in the late-80’s can be classified into three parts: Damian Hirst’s Hymn, Marc Quinn’s Self, and artwork by Tracey Emin and other artists associated with the YBA (Young British Artists), such as Sam Taylor-Johnson, Sarah Lucas, and Douglas Gordon. Although Kim was presented with an offer to sell Herst’s Hymn, he put that artwork as well as Hirst’s Charity and presented it to Cheonan Sculpture Park, claiming this was for the citizens of Cheonan.
Adding on, his collection of German contemporary artwork is renowned, with Sigmar Polke, Anselm Kiefer, and Georg Baselitz. His most prized artwork in Polke’s Fastest Gun in the West. In order to possess this piece, Kim went to Polke’s studio in Cologne, where he would also two other pieces by Polke. During his trip, he also encountered pieces from Markus Lüpertz, Thomas Demand, Jörg Immendorff, Neo Rauch, Pierre Huyghe, Ugo Rondinone, and more.
Lastly, he holds an outstanding Asian contemporary artwork collection. From avant-garde artists from Wang Guangyi and Fang Lijun, to other artists including Zhang Huan, Liu Jianhua, and Li Hui, he collected various artworks from China. Also, he collected pieces from other places, including India (Subodh Gupta, Jitish Kallat, L.N. Tallur), Philippines (Leslie De Chavez and Geraldine Javier), and Japan (Kohei Nawa and Nobuko Watanabe). For the list of Korean artist, Kim included Nam June Paik, Youngsuk Park, Moonseop Shim, Hyung-gu kang, Man-yeong Han, In-bae Kim, and Byeong-ho Kim. There were also pieces from Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gerhard Richter, Cindy Sherman, George Condo, and other artists that put the cherry on top for the collection. Among the various grim, dark art pieces, the main attraction for Kim’s collection is most definitely the Asian contemporary artwork.
Kim Chang-il bought the 'Space' office building in Seoul for 15 billion won in 2013 and showcased 'Arario Museum In Space.' It is decorated with 163 pieces of 36 works by 36 people, including Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol, in 30 large and small rooms intertwined like a maze. It has also bought Top Dong Cinema and Dongmun Motel in Wondocheong, Jeju City, to showcase its collection under the concept of 'preservation and creation.'
Kim, who is a morning person, starts his day by looking at art materials from the moment he opens his eyes to when he gets in bed. Since 1999, he has been a writer and holds individual exhibitions every two years. Many are asked which business people, collectors or artists are really you, and say, 'Why do you want me to take it off when it's all connected like a ring?' He has created five art galleries, which are 'water-eating hippopotamuses,' and his situation is not steady these days due to the rapid change in the distribution industry's paradigm. Although there may be altercations with matching everyone’s palate, still Korea needs a CI Kim to further develop the art scene.
