배효정 작가는 〈BIYANG_비양〉에서 해녀 ‘비양’으로 등장한다. 이 수중 퍼포먼스 영상 작품은 「바리공주 설화」와 「이공본풀이」 신화 속 서천 꽃밭을 모티프로 삼았으며, 옛 이야기와 제주 바닷속 이미지를 연결하고자 미술가, 무용가, 음악가 등 십여 명의 스태프가 협업하였다. 수중 촬영이라는 물리적 한계를 넘어선 무대 설치와 안무가 펼쳐지는 바다는, 제주 신화 속 이승과 저승의 경계인 서천 꽃밭처럼 신비롭다. 등장인물들이 해류를 거스르지 않고 숨을 고르며 펼치는 연기는 자연을 향한 겸허한 태도를 일깨운다.

In BIYANG, artist Bea, Hyo-jung performs as the haenyeo “Biyang.”This underwater performance video takes its motif from the Seocheon Flower Garden—an imaginary place featured in the Korean myths The Legend of Princess Bari and Igong Bonpuri—and was brought together by around a dozen collaborators, including visual artists, dancers, and musicians, to connect the old tales with the underwater imagery of Jeju.

The ocean, where stage installations and choreography unfold beyond the physical limits of underwater filming, evokes the mystical atmosphere of Seocheon Flower Garden, the boundary between this world and the afterlife in Jeju mythology. The performers’ movements, flowing gently with the current and pausing for breath, awaken a humble attitude toward nature.

제주 바다 아래 펼쳐진 ‘서천꽃밭’. 새내기 해녀 비양은 저승과 이승을 넘나드는 환상의 여정을 시작한다. 혼, 살, 피, 숨, 뼈를 살리는 꽃들과 함께, 삶과 죽음, 탄생과 환생의 경계를 가로지르며 생명의 가능성과 감정의 회복을 노래한다.

Beneath the sea of Jeju lies the “Seocheon Flower Field.”

Biyang, a novice haenyeo, embarks on a fantastical journey that crosses between this world and the afterlife. Together with the flowers that revive the soul, flesh, blood, breath, and bones, she sings of the possibilities of life and the recovery of emotion as she traverses the boundary between life and death, birth and rebirth.

〈BIYANG_비양〉은 바리데기 설화와 〈이공본풀이〉의 꽃신화에서 영감을 얻어 제주의 바다를 서사와 이미지, 춤과 미술로 엮은 수중 영상 작품이다. 바다를 단순한 배경이 아닌, 서사와 생태가 중첩된 장소로 바라보며, 바다 아래 펼쳐진 서천꽃밭의 풍경과, 그 안에서 피어나고 흘러가는 몸의 움직임을 통해 자연과 인간, 삶과 죽음 사이의 경계를 사유한다.

BIYANG is an underwater video work that weaves the sea of Jeju through narrative, imagery, dance, and art, inspired by the Baridegi myth and the flower myth in Igong Bonpuri. The sea is not merely a backdrop, but a site where narrative and ecology intersect. Through the scenes of the Seocheon Flower Field unfolding beneath the sea, and through the movements of the body that bloom and flow within it, the work contemplates the boundaries between nature and human, life and death.

○ 줄거리 Story

제주의 새내기 해녀 '비양'은 물질을 하던 중 밧줄에 몸이 얽혀 정신을 잃고 알 수 없는 섬에서 깨어난다. 섬을 헤매던 비양은 '서천꽃밭'에서 꽃선녀를 만나고,
그녀에게 생명의 꽃들을 건네받는다. 먼 바다를 돌아 집으로 가던 길에 비양은 난파된 배와 쓰러진 친구를 발견하고, 바다를 지키는 삼신과 꽃선녀는 그들을 살리기 위한 꽃잔치를 벌인다.

Biyang, a novice haenyeo from Jeju, loses consciousness while diving after becoming entangled in a rope and awakens on an unknown island. Wandering through the island, she meets a flower fairy in the “Seocheon Flower Field,” who gives her flowers of life. On her way home across the open sea, Biyang finds a wrecked ship and her fallen friend. The goddess Samsin and the flower fairy hold a flower feast to save them.

○ 작가노트 Artist’s Statement

물속은 언제나 느린 시간으로 흘렀다.

말보다 숨이 먼저 사라지고, 움직임은 몸이 아니라 물이 대신 기억해주는 곳.그곳에서 나는 ‘비양’이라는 이름의 새내기 해녀를 따라,저 먼 옛 신화 속 서천꽃밭을 상상했다.

뼈를 살리고, 살을 살리고, 피를 살리고, 숨을 살리고, 혼을 살린다던 설화 속 꽃들을 바다 아래 심었다. 꽃은 고정되지 않았다.

물살을 따라 흔들리고, 해조류에 감기며, 시간에 따라 색이 변하고 형태가 흐려졌다. 그들은 전설의 흔적을 품고 천천히 자라났다.

무용수들은 물속에서 숨을 나누며 천천히 몸을 풀었다. 꽃처럼 피고, 떠오르고, 스러지는 그들의 움직임은이 세계와 저 세계를 잇는 다리가 되었다.

우리는 함께 숨을 참고, 기다리고, 흘러가며 이 장면들을 만들어갔다.

〈BIYANG_비양〉은 그렇게 만들어졌다.누군가의 전승이기도 하고, 나의 몽상이자, 함께 만든 현실이기도 하다.

바다에 남겨진 기억을 더듬고, 우리가 잃어버린 감각을 천천히 불러오는 여정이었다.

Time always flowed more slowly beneath the sea.

It was a place where breath vanished before words, where movement was not

remembered by the body but by the water itself.

There, I followed a novice haenyeo named Biyang,

imagining the far-off Seocheon Flower Garden from ancient myth

I planted beneath the sea the blossoms said to restore bone, flesh, blood, breath, and soul.

But the flowers refused to stay still.

They swayed with the currents, entangled with seaweed, changed color over time,

and blurred in form.They held traces of legend and slowly grew.

The dancers shared breath underwater and slowly released their bodies.

Their movements bloomed, rose, and withered like flowers, becoming bridges

between this world and the next.

Together, we held our breath, waited, and drifted, shaping these scenes,

moment by moment.

BIYANG came into being in this way.

It is at once a legacy passed down, a dream of my own, and a reality we created together.

This work was a journey to trace memories left in the sea and slowly recover

the sensations we have lost.

And even now, as you look upon this piece—
