  2016년 12월 서울 압구정에 새롭게 개관한 K현대미술관은 미술관의 개관을 기념하여, 한국 회화의 ‘색채성’에 주목하는 ‘Before the Beginning and After the End’전을 연다. ‘한국 모노크롬 회화에의 대응’이라는 부제의 이번 전시는 단색화와 더불어 한국 근현대 미술사의 큰 축인 ‘색채성’을 재조명하는데, 한국 색채화의 거장으로 꼽히는 박생광과 전혁림을 포함하여, 김현철, 육근병, 이용백, 임상빈, 정진용, 홍경택 등 동시대 작가들의 작품이 소개된다. 특히 이번 전시는 그동안 공개되지 않았던 박생광 화백의 <고행기>와 <열반기>를 대중에 첫선을 보인다는데 의미가 있다. 박생광 화백은 샤머니즘과 불교가 결합한 한국적 토속신앙을 작품의 주요 주제로 삼는데, <고행기>는 작가의 오랜 벗이기도 했던 청담스님이 막 불교에 귀의하여 수행하는 과정을 그린 작품이며, <열반기>는 오랜 고행을 거쳐 마침 내 열반에 이른 청담스님의 모습을 담고 있다. 이 밖에도 전시는 한국적 색면추상의 선구자 전혁림 화백의 대형 회화 작품을 포함, 목기 1,050점으로 이루어진 <뉴 만다라> 연작과 80여 점의 <누드> 작품을 보여준다. 또한 육근병 작가를 포함하여, 이용백, 홍경택 작가 등 세대를 넘어, 다양한 장르를 통해 한국적 색채성을 보여주는 동시대 작가들의 작품이 소개된다.

  K Museum of Contemporary Art, established in December, 2016 presents a thematic group show, titled ‘Before the Beginning and After the End’ from 16 December, 2016 through 31 March, 2017. The show mainly delivers the encounter between the Korean tradition and the contemporary movement in Korean art. Centered on the representative artworks of two master painters in post-modern era, PARK Saeng-kwang and CHUN Hyuk-lim who are well known particularly for their colour use, 7 Korean artists have participated in the show and thematically delivered the aesthetic ensemble between the modern and contemporary art in Korea. In celebration of the museum’s grand opening, KMCA has showcased PARK Saeng-kwang’s unreleased master pieces and CHUN Hyuk-lim’s <New Mandara> series, paintings on 1,050 wooden bowls along with multiple artworks of contemporary artists. Through the show, the museum aims to reinterpret the aesthetics of Korean art, therefore become a pioneer to suggest the new perspective looking through the contemporary trend of Korean art.
