성북구립미술관에서는 ‘성북의 청괴들: 붓 끝에 기대어 홀로 가리라’ 전을 통해 여섯 명의 화가들이 화업과 풍류를 중심으로 교유한 이야기를 조망한다. 서울대학교 회화과 1회 졸업생인 산정 서세옥과 그의 제자이자 동료인 우현 송영방, 노석 신영상, 남계 이규선, 이석 임송희, 백계 정탁영은 1970년대부터 성북동에 하나둘 모여 살았다. 이들은 지근거리에 살며 돌을 사랑하는 취미를 공유하고 문인다운 소양을 쌓았는데, ‘성북의 청괴(淸怪)들’이라는 이름은 바로 이들을 이르던 말이었다.
본 전시에서는 전통을 뛰어넘어 과감한 조형적 실험으로 현대적인 화풍을 전개해 갔던 이들의 여정을 소개한다. 제1전시실에는 문인화의 전통과 유리되지 않으면서도 그 안에서 자신의 것을 새롭게 만들어야 한다는 이들의 고심을 느껴볼 수 있다. 제2전시실에서는 인물, 산수, 화조, 영모 등 한국화의 장르와 표현에 두루 능했던 여섯 화가의 면모를 확인할 수 있다. 같은 대상을 소재로 하였다 하더라도 화가의 심중에 담긴 정신과 운필의 차이는 각각의 그림에 활달한 기운과 개성을 담아내 보는 즐거움을 선사한다.
The Seongbuk Museum of Art has curated ‘The Six Cheonggoe (淸怪) Artists of Seongbuk’ to shed light on the companionship of the six painters, focusing on their paintings and appreciation for the arts. SUH Se-ok, SHIN Young-sang, SONG Youngbang, JUNG Tak-young, LEE Kyu-sun, and LIM Song-hee lived together in Seongbuk-dong from the 1970s. Having lived close to each other, they shared a love of ornamental rocks, and cultivated themselves as literati. The name of the group, “The Cheonggoe (淸怪: purehearted but eccentric) in Seongbuk”, literally referred to them. This exhibition introduces the journey of those who went beyond tradition and developed a modern style of art through bold formative experiments. The paintings showcased convey the hardships of the artists who struggled to make something original while not breaking away from the tradition of literati paintings. Even with the identical subjects, the difference of the spirit and the brush strokes intended by each artist carries passionate energy and individuality in each painting, presenting pleasure to the eye.
