‘장소와 통로’는 올림픽조각공원의 정체성과 역사를 상징하고 있다. 제24회 서울올림픽 개최를 위해 경기장 6개를 건설하였고, 유휴공간에 조각공원을 조성하여 191점이 배치 및 조성되었다. 그때까지 국내 조각의 경향은, 특정 사조나 흐름에 국한되어 있었으나, 서울올림픽조각공원의 조성을 계기로 새로운 변화를 맞이하게 되었다. 1980년대에 추상미술을 비롯하여 키네틱 아트, 누보 레알리즘 등 조형예술 사조를 한눈에 볼 수 있는 기회의 장소가 되어 기존의 한정 공간(기념비 조각)에서 환경 공간(현대조각)으로 유행이 변화되는 시기에서 확산과 환원의 과정으로 전환하게 된다. 현대조각은 작품 설치 현장에서 작품 제작이 이루어지는 특수성으로 ‘적절한 장소 선정’이 매우 중요한 개념이라고 할 수 있다. ‘장소’와‘통로’는, 모뉴먼트 조각에서 현대조 각으로 변화하는 과정을 서울올림픽조각공원의 작품들을 통해서 재연하고, 부흥시키고자 하는 큰 그림을 가지고 있다.
The exhibition title 《Place and Passage》 symbolizes the identity and history of the Seoul Olympic Sculpture Park. The park was built to host the 24th Seoul Olympic Games, with six stadiums constructed, and the sculpture park was added to the remaining area. The sculptures were installed from 1987 to 1988, with 191 pieces spread across a park area. Until that point, the trend of domestic sculpture was limited to specific schools or movements; however, the establishment of the Seoul Olympic Sculpture Park heralded a new era.
The 1980s provided a platform for various contemporary artistic movements, such as abstract art, kinetic art, and arte povera, marking a shift from monumental sculpture to environmental (modern) sculpture. This period marked a transition involving diffusion and return. The nature of modern sculpture, which emphasizes on-site creation, underscores the importance of “appropriate site selection.”
Through the exhibition's intentions, “Place” and “Passage” attempt to ‘Reenact’ and ‘Revive’ the transition from monument sculpture to modern sculpture through works from the Seoul Olympic Sculpture Park.
