2019 타이틀 매치 김홍석 vs. 서현석 ‘미완의 폐허’전은 미술을 둘러싸고 벌어지는 현상에 담겨진 개념을 새롭게 해석하며 관습적 인식에 균열을 내온 김홍석과 근대성의 맥락에서 공간을 연결하며 연극성, 건축의 의미를 탐색해온 서현석의 작품을 선보인다. 2019 타이틀매치에서 만난 두 작가는 절대적 가치가 사라지고, 자본과 스펙터클이 우리의 감각을 사로잡은 시대, 미술이 유효할 수 있는 조건에 대한 탐색으로 신작을 구성했다.
이 전시에서 김홍석의 ‘미완’과 서현석의 ‘폐허’는 절대적 가치가 사라진 오늘날, 작가로서 혼란스러운 상황에 대한 솔직한 고백과 미술 행위에 대한 숙고의 과정을 드러내는 개념이다. 그것을 풀어내는 김홍석과 서현석의 작업 방식은 타이틀 매치에서 서로 매치하기 어려운 방향성을 지향하고 있는 듯하다. 하지만 두 작가의 서로 다른 요소들이 의미와 구성을 엮어내며, 둘의 작업이 함께 할 때 비로소 입체적인 협업을 이루는 2019 타이틀 매치전을 보여준다.
2019 Title Match: Gimhongsok vs. SEO Hyun-Suk ‘Incomplete Ruins’ presents newly commissioned works by Gimhongsok and SEO Hyun-Suk. Gimhongsok has been reinterpreting concepts and ideas that are embedded in different phenomena that occur in and around art, disrupting the conventional perception of art. In the meantime, SEO Hyun-Suk has been examining the meaning of theatricality and architecture by connecting different places and locations under the context of modernity. For 2019 Title Match, the two artists created new works that investigate the conditions of validity for today’s art that exist in a world where absolute values are vanished and our senses are captivated by the capital and its spectacles.
In 2019 Title Match, Gimhongsok’s ‘incompleteness’ and SEO Hyun-Suk’s ‘ruins’ are working as concepts that are employed by the artists to make candid confessions about the confusing state of being artists in the era of no absolute values and reveal a process of thought towards art activities. The ways through which the two artists create their works seem to point to disparate directions that cannot be matched under the frame of ‘title match.’ However, the different elements employed by the two artists generate meanings in a certain structure. Presented together within the framework of Title Match, Gimhongsok and SEO Hyun-Suk’s works build multidimensional collaboration.
