LEE Jong kwan, Joup-Pick, 5330 objects, Dimensions variable
청주시립미술관 로컬프로젝트 ‘포룸FOUR ROOMS’전 세 번째 초대작가로 이종관 작가의 전시를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 이종관 작가의 여러 갈래의 작업 중 자신이 수년간 여행을 하며 주워온 쓰레기 수집을 위트 있게 보여준다. 이종관은 시종일관 무겁고 진중한 예술론을 배반하듯 주변의 버려진 사물을 사용하여 키치적인 작업들을 이어오고 있다.
2002년 두 번째 개인전 ‘석고붕어-명상’전은 석고로 찍어 만든 붕어빵 조각으로, 자신의 이야기와 예술적 방향, 태도를 쉽게 소통하고자 했던 작업의 전초적 시도였다. 이후 2006년 ‘미흐라브-벽감’전, 2007년 ‘비움과 채움’전, 2017년 ‘거리의 물건들’전, 2018년 ‘사물이 사람을 바라보다’전으로 이어오는 모든 작업의 맥락이 그러하고, 자연스레 목적과 정처 없는 예술론을 실천하게 된다. 언뜻 보면 누구나 알기 쉬운 일상의 사물과 상투적인 이미지를 전면에 배치하여, 오히려 진부했지만 자칭 세련되고 아이코닉한 ‘이종관 세계’에 어느 누구든 가볍게 접근할 수 있도록 배려한 작품이며 그 상투성에 또 ‘왜?’를 묻는 아이러니의 한 장치다.
This exhibition by the artist LEE Jong-kwan is the third part of “Four Rooms”, the local project of Cheongju Museum of Art. This time, the exhibition displays in a witty way the collection of the garbage that the artist has picked up during years of his journeys. As if he betrays serious, ponderous theory of art, he continues kitsch-like works using abandoned objects around him. His second solo exhibition in 2002 ‘Plaster Carp-Meditation’ presented the sculptures of carp, casted with plaster, which was like a prelude of such works to communicate easily his story, artistic direction and attitude. Then followed other exhibitions in the same vein: ‘Mahrab-Alcove’ (2006), ‘Emptying and Filling’ (2007), ‘Objects from the Street’ (2017), and ‘Objects observe People’ (2018). He naturally got to practice a theory of art without any declared purpose or destination. These works, with routine objects and cliche images in front, looked rather ordinary at first glance. On the other hand, even though they are humbly considering for anyone to be able to approach easily the soi-disant sophisticated and iconic ‘LEE Jong-kwan World’, they are also a device of irony that questions again ‘why?’ to the cliche.
