<미얀마 작가 초대전 – 치유의 순간>은 세계 곳곳에서 벌어지는 각종 재난상황과 사상과 이념의 충돌로 인해 상처를 겪고 있는 어지럽고 불안한 현 시점을 바라보고 위로하기 위해 기획된 전시이다. 그 어느때보다 힘든 상황을 겪고있을, 하지만 위기극복을 도모하며 희망을 가득 품은 미얀마 아티스트들의 순수한 눈을 통해 바라보는 세상의 아름다운 면과, 힘든 순간일수록 강렬하게 다가오는 위로의 순간을 작품을 통해 다시금 상기시켜 전시를 보는 이들에게 희망과 치유의 시간으로 승화되길 소망하는 마음으로 기획되었다. 

사실 현재 뿐만 아니라 바이러스와 전염병, 전쟁, 민주항쟁 등 위기는 늘 인류의 역사와 함께 해 왔다. 하지만 우리는 위기가 도래할 때마다 우리 안에 내제된 가장 강하고 숭고한 힘으로 절망을 극복하고 오늘 이 순간을 이끌어 냈다. 그 극복의 과정에는 예술이 함께해 왔다. 한국전쟁을 겪으며 종이를 살 수 없어 담배 내부 포장지였던 은지에 그림을 그려야 했던 삶의 고난속에서도 끝까지 작품활동을 멈추지 않았던 이중섭이 보여준 열정과 희망이 그러했듯. 피카소가 스페인 내란의 안타까운 비극을 여과없이 표현한 게르니카가 대작이 되어 후대에게 영원히 잊어서는 안될 기억과 가슴 저린 교훈을 전달해 주듯. 

좋은 그림에는 에너지가 있다. 진심을 다해 그린 그림에는 작가가 보는 소중한 순간과 그 의미가고스란히 담겨있고, 작업을 하면서 내뿜은 열정의 숨과 손짓의 흔적이 모두 남아있다. 혼란스러운 시국, 어려운 상황속에서 예술에 대한 열정을 저버리지 않은 미얀마 예술가들의 작업에서 진심 어린 위로와 용기의 메시지가 전해지는 이유이다. 이들이 작품을 통해 표현하는 소박한 주제, 일상적인 이미지, 알록달록 순진무구한 색감들은 사실 현재 우리가 그리워하고 갈망하는, 힘겨운 시국이 우리에게서 앗아간 바로 그것이다. 자유롭게 세계 곳곳을 여행하며 거리에서 흘러나오는 음악을 들었던 추억, 어느 것에도 위협받지 않고 평화로이 내 방안에 사물을 응시하며 조용히 생각에 잠기는 여유. 당연했던 모든 것이 당연하지 않게 된 상황 속에서 그림을 바라보고 감상하는 시간은 우리에게 고요하고 개인적인 위안과 치유를 선사해 줄 것이다. 

Zaw Win Pe 작가는 미얀마의 아름다운 풍경을 특유의 감각적인 색채언어와 힘있는 마띠에르 표현으로 전달하는 미얀마의 대표적인 주요작가이다. 1960년 Magway Division의 Le Gaing 마을에서 태어나 미얀마의 수도 양곤에서 자라고 활동한 그는 1981년부터 1984년까지 양곤 주립 미술학교에서 야간 수업을 들으며 미술을 공부했다. 오늘날 미얀마에서 가장 명성 있는 아티스트인 Zaw Win Pe는 자국 뿐만 아니라 프랑스, 미국, 독일, 홍콩, 싱가포르, 인도, 태국 및 기타 아시아 지역에서 10번의 개인전과 50번 이상의 그룹 전시를 이어오며 국제적으로도 인정받은 유망한 작가이다. 작가는 2004년 미얀마의 주요 갤러리인 리버 갤러리와 미얀마 타임즈 언론사가 주최한 미얀마 현대 미술상을 수상하였다. 그의 작품은 싱가포르 국립미술관, 미얀마 국립박물관, 그리고 양곤 주재 미국 대사관과 미얀마의 특급 호텔들에 주로 콜렉팅 되었으며, 2013년에는 독일 뮌헨소재 슈타틀리체스 박물관에 수집되었고, 2017년부터 꾸준히 소더비 홍콩 경매에 출품되어 오고 있다. 

작가는 2018년 3월부터 노스 다곤 지역에 자신의 스튜디오인  ZWP 아트 스튜디오를 운영하며 그의 예술 여정을 더욱 풍부하게 발전시켜 왔다. 

'나는 특정 장면을 바라볼 때 저를 덮쳐오는 감정을 그린다. 가끔, 내 감정이 폭발하고 내 눈앞에 펼쳐진 언덕이 빛과 색으로 울려오는 것 같다. 나는 색이 가진 힘이 인간의 생각과 감정에 대한 모든 것을 말해줄 수 있다고 믿고있다.' 

'반복되는 루틴이 우리의 삶을 지배할 때가 있다. 하지만 예술가들이 그저 자고, 먹고, 그림을 그리는 행위 같은 반복적인 연습에 갇혀 마치 로봇처럼 영감을 받는 기회를 져버리거나, 세상을 그저 시시하게 바라본다면, 예술은 더 이상 신선하고 활기찬 것이 아닐 것이다. 예술로서 새롭고 다채로운 것을 선보이는 일에는 생각보다 많은 힘과 창의력 그리고 에너지가 필요로 한다. 나는 자유로운 영혼과 굳건한 나의 의지 및 책임감으로 경계와 제약에서 벗어나는 예술에 대한 기준을 만들려고 노력한다.'

Zaw Win Pe was born in 1960 in Le Gaing village, Magway Division but he grew up in Yangon. He studied Art by taking evening class in State School of Fine Art from 1981 to 1984. 

Zaw Win Pe has had ten solo exhibitions and over 50 group showsexhibited both within Myanmar and overseas including Paris, USA, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Thailand and other parts of Asia. He is also the winner of Myanmar Contemporary art awards which was held in 2004 by River Gallery and Myanmar Times.

In regards to collections, his paintings were acquiredbythe Singapore National Art Museum, National Museum (Yangon) and Embassy of the United States of America, Yangon. In 2013, another painting of his was collected by Staatliches Museum, Munich, Germany. Additionally, many pieces of the artist have been auctioned by Sotheby’s Auction Hong Kong since 2017. 

For added activities to his art journey, he has started running his own art studio called ZWP Art Studio in North Dagon where all of his artworks and collections are allowed to explore since March 2018.

Zaw Win Pe says, “I paint the emotions that hit me when I look out over a particular scene. Sometimes, it seems as if my feelings are exploding and the hills are ringing with colors. I believe color can tell everything about a person’s thoughts and feelings.”

“Routines run our lives. However, art will no longer be fresh and energetic if artiststays stuck in the same, repetitive practice of getting sleep, eating right and drawing, having me feeing robotic, uninspired, or just plain stale.It requires strength, creativity and energy to present something new and unordinary in art to be refreshed. I’m trying to create a certain standard of art, which escapes from boundaries and restrictions with free soul and self-responsibility.”

Thar Gyi 

Thar Gyi 는 미얀마에서 손꼽히는 현대미술가로서, 사실적인 표현방식이 주를 이루는 미얀마 미술 행보에 창의적이고 추상적인 작품을 선보인 예술가이다. Thar Gyi는 1966년 미얀마의 수도, 버마 양곤에서 태어나, 삼촌이자 로카나 미술관의 설립자 중 한명인 모더니스트 조각가 Win Mint 의 영향을 많이 받으며 미술세계에 자리를 잡았다. 90년대 후반부터 2000년대 초반까지 주로 인상주의적 작품을 그리며 아시아와 미국, 캐나다 에서 많은 관심을 받게 되었다. 양곤에 있는 삼촌의 미술관에서 일하면서 세계적으로 유명한 거장들의 작품을 접한 이유로 그의 초기 창작물은 사실주의, 인상주의, 표현주의에 초점을 맞춰져 있었다. 2010년대에 들어서서 부터는 들판에서 보여지는 선적인 요소에서 착안된, 보다 미니멀한 작품을 제작하고 있으며, 이 작품들은 태국, 베트남, 싱가포르, 인도네시아, 인도, 중국, 미국, 캐나다의 콜렉터들과 미술관에서 많은 관심과 사랑을 받고있다. 작가는 여행을 하며 느끼는 이국적이고 새로운 이미지와 느낌을 이용해 영감을 얻고 창의적인 작품활동을 해왔다. 코로나 시국으로 인해 이번 전시에 직접 한국을 방문하지는 못했지만 머지않아 꼭 한국을 방문하여 이곳에서 새롭게 얻는 영감으로 작업할 수 있기를 작가는 희망한다. 

“나의 작품세계은 열린 생각과 색감에 의해 움직인다. 예술에는 확실하게 영혼이 있고 나는 수많은 생각과 고민을 통해 영혼어린 창작물을 끌어낸다. 나는 항상 새로운 것을 찾고 있고, 앞으로 더 많은 작품을 통해 나의 새로운 생각과 그로인한 작품의 솔직한 변화를 선보이고 싶다. 한국에서 나의 작품을 전시할 수 있게 되어 감사하게 생각한다. 앞으로 더 많은 문화 교류를 통해 미얀마의 예술가들이 한국의 관객들에게 자주 소개되기를 기대하며, 높은 수준의 한국 관객분들이 나의 작품을 즐기고 향유해 주시기를 기대한다. 2년이 넘도록 지속되는 코로나 바이러스의 시대에서 벗어나 하루빨리 전 지구적인 이 재난의 상황이 회복되기를 바란다.”

I'm a Myanmar painter. I am one of the most creative and abstract artists in Myanmar and created impressionist works from 1998 to 2002. First of all, thank you for revealing my work at the Korean Gallery Exhibition. We look forward to introducing Myanmar artists to Korea through more cultural exchanges in the future. I hope many Korean visitors will evaluate my work. I want to be evaluated because I think the level of Korean visitors will be high. My work moves more by open thoughts and colors. Art certainly has a soul and draws out new creations with a lot of thought. I'm always looking for something new. In the future, I will be able to see new changes in myself through more works. I was born in Yangon, Burmese in 1966. My uncle was Win Mint, a modernist sculptor who was one of the founders of the Rocana Museum of Art. I was influenced a lot by my uncle, inspired, and proud of him. From 1998 to 2002, many impression works were painted, mostly foreigners from many Asian countries, the United States, and Canada purchased dozens of paintings from us. While working at my uncle's art museum in Yangon, I got to know the works of famous artists. My early creations focused on realism, impressionism, and expressionism. In the 2000s, my works were sold by collectors from Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, India, China, the United States, and Canada and art galleries. I will draw more creative pictures in the future. I want to travel to Korea while doing more creative activities. I want to get good ideas through many trips. Finally, I hope that the world will recover as soon as possible in the era of COVID-19 over two years. Thanks you.

Kyaw Lin은 미얀마 에야와디 구역의 라부타에서 태어나, 미얀마의 미술 거장 아웅신트, 먀타웅, 윈페민트, 유아우에게 미술을 배웠다. 그는 1997년부터 2019년까지 싱가포르, 중국, 태국, 프랑스, 일본, 말레이시아, 독일에서 70회 이상의 그룹전과, 2회의 개인전, 16회의 해외 아트 페어 등 에 출품하며 예술가의 길을 걸어왔다. 풍경화를 그리면서 작가는 풍경화라는 주제 자체에 초점을 두기보다는 본인의 감정에 기반하여 선, 형태, 색, 무늬를 표현한다. 그는 말한다. “저는 보여지는 그대로의 자연스러운 표현보다는 감정, 기하학적 형태, 반복적 패턴, 그리고 선적인 요소에 중점을 둡니다.” Kyaw Lin의 작품은 2차원적 요소와 3차원적 시각적 요소를 결합함으로써 독특한 관점을 만들어낸다. 

“이번 한국 전시회에서 관객분들이 제 그림을 어떻게 감상하실지 기대가 됩니다. 한국 드라마가 미얀마 에서 많은 인기를 끌고 수많은 미얀마 사람들이 애청하는 것처럼 우리는 한국에 대한 관심이 많습니다. 저 또한 한국 문화에 관심이 많은데, 한국의 시골풍경은 어떻습니까? 한국의 시골 풍경을 제가 캔버스에 표현하면 어떨지 많이 생각하곤 합니다. 특히나 한국의 가을은 정말 아름다울 것 같습니다. 앞으로 저는 풍경화를 더 많이 그리고 선, 도형, 색, 무늬를 감정을 바탕으로 자유롭게 표현할 것입니다. 이번 기획전시를 통해 미얀마 작가들의 작품이 한국에 전시될 수 있다는 사실에 기쁘고, 앞으로도 저는 한국 관객분들께 새로운 신작들을 소개하고 싶습니다. 감사합니다.”

I was born in Labutta, Ayeyarwady Division, Myanmar. I graduated B.A Painting from the University of Art and Culture(Yangon) in 1998. After the graduation, I studied and learned from art masters Aung Sint, Mya Thaung, Win Pe Myint and U Aw. From 1997 to 2019, he had participated in over 70 group art exhibitions, 2 solo shows, and 16 abroad art shows based in Singapore, China, Thailand, France, Japan, Malaysia, and Germany. While drawing landscape paintings, I express lines, shapes, colors, and patterns based on emotions more than themes. I focus on emotions, geometric shapes, and straight lines rather than natural expressions. I want to mention colors, lines, shapes, and patterns in my paintings. Most of my works create a unique perspective by combining two-dimensional and three-dimensional shots visually. I'm looking forward to how the visitors will evaluate my paintings at this Korean exhibition. Korean dramas are very liked and watched by Myanmar people. That's how much interest I have in Korea. I'm also very interested in Korean culture, what about the countryside of Korea? Can I put it in my canvas? I think a lot. Especially in autumn in Korea, it is so beautiful. In the future, I will draw more landscape paintings and express lines, shapes, colors, and patterns more freely based on emotions. I would like to show Korean visitors with other new works. Aye Nyein Myint의 작품은 무생물 물체에 초점을 맞춘다. 그의 작품 'The Shape' 시리즈는 독특하게도, 복잡한 바로크 양식의 물건들이 물이 반정도 찬 물컵에 담겨있는 모습을 묘사한다. 그는 바로크 양식의 모양과 형태가 좋아서 그것들을 그리기 시작했다. “어떠한 작품을 감상할 때, 보는이 마다 다른 관점으로 볼 수 있다고 생각한다. 나는 색감과 질감의 요소로 사물을 느끼며 그것들을 그려낸다.” 라고 작가는 설명한다. 대부분의 경우, 작가는 있는 그대로 사물을 극사실적으로 표현해야 한다고 느끼고 이를 굉장히 섬세한 작업으로 선보인다. 이러한 디테일하고 섬세한 작품을 그려내는 과정을 통해 더 많은 고민과 생각을 가지고 작가만의 스타일의 정물화를 표현하고자 하는 그의 방향성을 엿볼 수 있다. 

“이번 한국 전시회를 통해 제 작품들이 한국 관객분들께 어떻게 다가갈지 기대가 됩니다. 한국 관람객 분들의 제 작품에 대한 반응이 저의 새로운 작업에 도움이 될 수 있을 것 같아요. 앞으로도 색감과 질감을 통해 더욱더 세밀하고 섬세하게 사물을 그릴 것입니다. 무생물의 물체를 아름다운 붓터치와 다채로운 색감으로 마치 살아있는 듯 생생하게 표현 하는 것에 중점을 두고 작업할 것이며 그리하여 한국 관람객 분들께 저의 극도로 섬세하고 경지에 오른 작품을 선보이고 싶습니다. 제 이전 작품 시리즈 중에 한때 미얀마의 꽃들을 많이 찾아서 그린 적이 있습니다. 기회가 된다면 한국의 아름다운 꽃들을 주제로 작업해보고 싶습니다. 정말 이번 한국 전시회에 초대되어, 마치 제 인생의 새로운 서막이 펼쳐진 듯한 기분입니다. 매우 기쁘고 감사합니다.”

It focuses on inanimate objects, and my painting 'The Shape' depicts complex Baroque-style things half-soaked in a water cup. 'I really like the shape of a baroque, so I decided to draw it. You can think differently from the perspective of the person looking at the picture. I am drawing things in the way I feel in terms of color and texture. Some of my paintings are very detailed. Because I feel like I need to show it as real. And very sometimes some pictures don't. I will paint still life paintings with more thoughts. I'm looking forward to how my works will be evaluated at this Korean exhibition. If Korean visitors look at my work and evaluate it, I think it can be helpful for new works. In the future, I will draw objects more delicately in terms of color and texture. Focusing on inanimate objects and coloring them with beautiful touches that seem alive at the fingertips. The works that were created and more delicately drawn to Korean visitors I want to show you. There was a time when I drew many Myanmar flowers. If I have a chance, I would like to draw beautiful flowers in Korea. I'm drawing the emotions and colors I feel in each work. I think this exhibition in korea is invited to another world of My life. I'm very happy and grateful. I would like to express my gratitude to all Korean visitors.

Zaw Zaw 는 미얀마의 현대미술가 이다. 1969년 수도 양곤에서 태어나, 어린 시절 아름답고 평화로운 양곤의 불교 문화 속에서 자라왔으며, 1986년 양곤 미술학교의 야간 수업을 통해 미술을 공부했다. 이후 1997년 양곤에서의 첫 전시를 통해 작품을 선보였고 이후 미얀마의 다양한 그룹전에 참여하고 미국, 홍콩, 태국과 같은 많은 해외 전시에도 출품하였다. 그는 급격하게 변화하는 현대시대에 맞게 새로운 기술과 새로운 표현방법을 찾기 위해 늘 색다른 재료들을 사용하는 현대미술가 이다. 미얀마는 2008년에 나르기크 라는 이름의 사이클론으로 자연재해를 겪었다. Zaw Zaw는 이와 관련된 작업 Mother Ayeyarwaddy로 2009년 툰 재단의 올해의 작품상을 수상했다. 2015년 아크릴 텍스트 프린트로 제작된 'The Lady' 시리즈는 2016년 미국과 홍콩에서 조명되었으며 지금까지도 작가를 대표하는, 가장 잘 알려진 모티브 중 하나로 남아 있다. 신문을 이용한 콜라주기법의 시리즈 'Reply'는 사회와 정치를 향해 작가가 가지고 있는 감정과 견해를 여과없이 표현한 작품군이다. 2017년은 작가가 가장 다작을 행한 한 해 였으며, ‘John Lennon’을 비롯한 작가가 가장 자랑스럽게 여기는 작품들이 이 기간에 만들어졌다. 작가의 또다른 대표작 시리즈, 열대지방 식물인 티크 나무를 레이저 커팅하여 지도의 형태로 표현한 ‘Homeland’ 시리즈도 이 기간에 완성되었다. 

“지금은 전 세계에 만연한 COVID-19 상황으로 인해 다양한 작품활동이 어렵지만, 이 기간을 통해 앞으로 해야 할 작업들에 대한 아이디어가 떠올랐습니다. 한국 손님들에게는 제 티크 나무 작품이 어떻게 느껴질 지 기대가 됩니다. 한국 도시의 지도 또한 티크 나무를 사용해 작품화 하고 싶습니다. 한국에는 아름다운 사계절이 있다지요. 추운 겨울이 지나고 따뜻한 봄이 와 한국의 COVID-19 재난이 하루빨리 사라졌으면 좋겠습니다. 기도합니다.”

I am Myanmar contemporary artist Zaw Zaw. Born in Yangon in 1969. I remember Yangon, who was full of childhood memories and beautiful and peaceful Buddhist culture. In 1986, I studied painting at Yangon Art School as a night class. My first work was first presented in Yangon in 1997. Also participated in many group events with Myanmar artists and participated in many overseas events such as the United States, Hong Kong, and Thailand. I'm an artist who always uses different media to find new creations and new technologies. Myanmar had a natural disaster of Cyclone Nargic in 2008. My work, , Mother Ayeyarwaddy, won the 2009 Tun Foundation's Best Picture of the Year award. The 2015 series ‘The Lady’ produced in acrylic text prints , was screened in the U.S. and Hong Kong in 2016 and remains one of my most popular motifs. The 'Reply' newspaper as collage series is simply a responsive expression of social, political, and my feelings and views. In 2017, I did the most works, and John Lennon and other works I'm proud of were completed during this period. In addition, laser cutting was created with teak wood using Google Maps. This work was also completed during this period. Now, due to the COVID-19 situation around the world, it is difficult to work on other works of art, but during this period, I thought of ideas to do in the future. Finally, I look forward to the sincere evaluation of Korean visitors on my work at this Korean exhibition. I am looking forward to how Korean visitors will evaluate my teak tree work. I can creation also as map of Korean cities with teak. I hope Korean visitors will evaluate my work, and I want to show you another acrylic painting in the future. As far as I know, there are four seasons in Korea. I hope that the cold winter will pass and warm spring will come and Korea's COVID-19 will disappear soon. I pray.

“미얀마 작가 초청전에 제 사진이 전시되었습니다. 영광이고, 감사합니다. 미얀마의 아름다운 자연과 불교 유적지, 그리고 다양한 삶과 전통이 담긴 사진으로 더 많은 나라와 사람들에게 보여졌으면 좋겠습니다. 이번 전시회를 통해 한국 관람객들이 작품을 감상하고 다양한 이야기가 나왔으면 좋겠습니다. 미얀마에는 아름다운 지역과 장소가 많습니다. 저는 더 많은 지역과 아름다운 곳곳을 카메라에 담을 것입니다. 한국은 사계절이 뚜렷하죠? 한국의 가을은 사진으로 보더라도 정말 아름답습니다. 언젠가 한국의 아름다운 자연을 카메라에 담아서 미얀마에서 책으로 출판하고 싶습니다. 예술은 장르마다 개성이 있고, 사진 또한 예외가 아닙니다. 저는 원칙적으로 상업성에 초점을 맞춘 사진보다는 자연스러운 사진을 찍습니다. 미얀마 대도시의 사라져가는 공간을 기록하고 시간의 현실을 그 순간의 모습으로 남겨두고 싶습니다. 앞으로 10년, 20년 안에 제가 서 있는 이 땅의 마을들은 현대화된 건물들로 탈바꿈 할 것입니다. 앞으로도 계속해서 아름답고 순수한 미얀마를 카메라로 담아낼 것입니다. 제 사진들이 한국 미술 전시회에 초청되어, 저의 사진들로 미얀마의 감성을 소개 할  수 있게 되어 다시 한번 감사의 말씀을 드립니다.

My photos were displayed in the Myanmar artist invitation exhibition. It's an honor, and thank you. I hope it will be show to more countries and people with pictures of Myanmar's beautiful nature, Buddhist sites, and various lives and traditions. I want to capture more nature with camera. I hope that through this exhibition, Korean visitors will appreciate the pictures and various stories will come out. Myanmar has many beautiful areas and places. I will capture more areas and beautiful places on camera. There are four distinct seasons in Korea, right? Autumn in Korea is really beautiful, even though I saw it in pictures. Someday, I want to capture the beautiful nature of Korea on camera and publish it as a book in Myanmar. Each genre of art has its own specificity, and photography is no exception. In principle, I take pictures as they are naturally rather than photos focused on commerciality. I want to record the disappearing space of Myanmar's metropolitan city and leave the reality of time in the shape of it. In the next 10 or 20 years, the cities in this land where I stand will be transformed into modernized buildings. I will capture more beautiful and pure Myanmar with camera in the future. Once again, I would like to express my gratitude as my photos can be invited to the Korean art exhibition.
