왜 아시아인가? 이 전시의 의의는 특정 지역의 지리학적 이슈에 따른 정체성의 문제를 논하고자 함이 아니라, 특수한 역사적 상황, 내재하여 있는 정신성, 그리고 그 시각적 힘이 집적되어 있을 때 왜 아시아인가를 역설적으로 보여주고자 함에 있다. 즉, ‘아시아’라는 카테고리는 한계가 아니라 오히려 세계화를 얘기하기 위한 화두이다. ‘아시아 코드’를 전시의 대주제로 하여 초대 작가들의 내면에 공통으로 내재하여 있는 사상의 뿌리를 ‘공’(空)으로 압축하였다. 

본 전시에 출품한 13명의 작가가 선보이는 아시아 코드는 본능적인 방어 기제로서의 카르텔이나 서구에 의해 강요된 콤플렉스에서 비롯된 집단화가 아니라, 작가와 작품에 내재한 진정성이라는 잣대에 의해서 평가되어야 마땅하다. 이 전시는 출품 작가들의 작품 특성에 따라 크게 세 개의 카테고리로 분류되는데, ‘시간-응시’, ‘공간-空.間.’, ‘파동-역사’가 그것이다. 없기 때문에 채울 수 있고 차 있기 때문에 비워낼 수 있는 앰비벌런스(Ambivalence)의 묘미를 느껴볼 수 있는 전시이다.

Why Asia? This exhibition is of significance in that it tries not to discuss Asia’s identity pertaining to its geography, but to showcase paradoxically why Asia is important when its spirituality and visual strength accumulates. That is, the category of ‘Asia’ is not the limit but discourse remarking on globalization. Based on its main title Asia Code, the concept of‘gong’(zero,空) was chosen as the root of thought commonly innate in the soul of the invited artists. 

The 13 artists participating in the show are not come from a collectivization or any cartel, as some instinctive defense mechanism, or forced by the West, but have to be evaluated by the measure of their authenticity. The exhibition is largely divided into three categories by the hallmarks of works exhibited: Time-Gaze, Space-Zero, Wave-History. There is the subtle charm of ambivalence here - it can be full because it is empty, and it can be empty because it is full.
